Knob on dashboard?

I've just got a 1991 Terrano R3M TD27 and there's a knob on the dash below the steering wheel with a picture of an engine on it. It only has and in and an out position - nothing in between.
It's the middle one in the pic - the toggle switch is for the spots.
Does anyone have any idea what it does?

I thought it was for idle? Should be able to wind it in and out to set?

i thought it was a hand throttle. like an accelerator, but for your hand instead of your foot

Just seems to click in and out (pull/push). There's a definite click and two points it sits at...

Have you tried it with the engine running? Might be broken?

check what it connects to
i don't know with nissan but i think i've sen one similar and it was a shutoff for intake air ie close a low mounted air intake for water crossings.

If you pull it out while you have the throttle pedal depressed does it lock your throttle in place?

Terranos often have a knob on the dashboard which is not normally much use, mainly to match the knob behind the steering wheel, and the truck itself.

my 94 terrano clicks out about three clicks raising the engine speed the further out it goes, i use it a bit like a choke the first start of the day, my 1991 terrano did exactly the same and used it as a hand throttle.

Yep - definitely the idle speed adjuster... Had to pull it a little harder than I was before to make it do anything (was being too careful before)...

They always work better when you use the accelerator to get the engine speed to where you want it, then pull the knob out to hold it there.

If yours is anything like mine, the first 3 or 4 notches are so worn that it won't hold. I'm going to look for a replacement one soon which is a wind up type.

Be careful using hand throttles to much, I had issues with the idle on my Cruiser and countered it by using the hand throttle, until I needed to brake in a hurry, with the throttle pushing from the rear and me pushing the brakes on the front it had a tendency to lock up the front wheels and a skidding swerving fat Cruiser bearing down on a stationary Mazda 323 is not a pleasant beast.
If you pull it out make sure you put it back in before it gets you into trouble, also a good mantra for life

A better mantra for life would be to pull it out before its too late?

It is to add the supercharger and nos when you need it! Just wait till ya in the crap, then hold on to the knob and pull! That 2.7 will seem as if it has another four cyliners added to it!!! Oh, but be sure to wear that neck brace to stop whiplash...... and have a TUI, yea right!
