Diff codes

I have recently bought a 1994 SX Prado which has the Diff code G284 on the Chasis plate. From google it appears this means it's an 8inch (G) 4.3 ratio (28) 4 spider "locking" (4). Can some please explain what the "locking" means?

Have you got a diff lock switch in your cab?

No, just a hub lock & an H4 button

would appear to be an open diff... its not an LSD is it? may have a LSD sticker on the actual diff?

according to my paperwork, you are correct on the axle codes.
you should have a 4.3 ratio 8" locking diff.
does there look like there has been a switch down beside the steering column on the left at some stage. maybe someone on here who has a prado with a factory rear locker can explain a little better where the switch is and what it looks like.
someone may have removed it before selling it to you

mines a G284 too, and doesnt have a locker ;-(

According to the info i have
G 8.00 inch
28 4.3 Ratio
4 4 Pinion non LSD
If it was a LSD it would be 5 (4 Pinion LSD)
