Mixing used engine oil with diesel and using as fuel

Is it possible to mix your old used engine oil with diesel and use it like biodiesel, Its a pain in the arse getting rid of 11ltrs of engine oil every time i do a change.. :?:
I can only imagine it would smoke and smell like a burining tyre so not quite the same as the fish and chip smell of using soya or canola mixed with diesel

Just a thought eh

I though about this a while ago then thought about why I change my engine oil, because it is full of dirt maybe small metal filings etc, that cant be good for the injectors!!!!!

Maybe if you could clean it completely first, but then you could put it back in the engine as diesel is cheaper than oil for the fuel tank.

I guess, It was mentioned on another forum with using used veg oil.. filter out the bits with a 35micron filter it should be good as to add to diesel. Maybe this could work with re-using the used engine oil in the crankcase aswell??

Thinking further engine oil might also break down so no good for the crank case, but I dont know.
You would need a filter and a magnet to remove the metal, easier to drop off at the recycling and let someone else deal with it

i remeber someone had a rig to heat the old oil (proberly to reduce water), then filter it and chuck it in the tank. i havn't heard how well it works.

would be worth looking in to as i hear companies are having to pay to get rid of it. before other companies would gladly take it (used in fueling furnaces i think).

i know of some guys from the wairapa who mix 50% diesel with 50% hydrolic oil, apparently it works good

isnt hydraulic oil more expensive than desiel?

Not used, people pay to get rid of it. Ive heard the Hydrolic oil one too.
Brother of a friend very nearly bought a shitload of old transmission line oil, the stuff in the transfer boxes.
Planned on running it in his daily.

I mix 50% used engine oil and 50% diesel filter it through a hydraulic filter then a diesel filter then tghrough a Frantz toilet roll filter and run it in my Terrano TD27T with no adverse effects. No smoke at all funny smell but thats it. Starts fines runs well no noticable difference in power, just cheap fuel!!!

Can you explain your filtration procedure in more detail with pictures please?

It does. But consider the zinc and all the other anti-wear additives which aren't supposed to be burnt in your engine then fed out the exhaust for the public to breathe.

most diesels burn them anyway
mine uses a liter a week

Are you okay with that?
I once burnt 4 litres of oil in 200km. But that was the last trip before the rebuild. I think most of the valve stem seals were gone.
Now I lose nothing noticable between 10,000km changes.

You have a few issies to work out
The oil will separate out (I does I did a little experiment)
There is a lot of water in it you would have to cook out (cook oil be very carefull)
The fuel filter will not like it
The engine will run a lot hotter on oil and possibly overrun (the heat makes enough vacuum to draw fuel through the pump)
In colder weather your fuel will be a lot thicker and you may need to pre heat it
The additives in the oil are far more aggressive on the o rings and rubber sections than diesel

Old tractors did use thick oil (peanut oil, olive oil etc), but in all of these there was a kerro heater to warm the fuel like Bio Diesel has, engine oil also has a massive amount of sulphur and other stuff that will end up in the combustion chamber injectors and exhaust.

Yes it can be done but I am not sure there will be any cost saving in the medium term and I am pretty confident long term (3 to 5 years at 20%) there will be additional costs involved. Also if in a Toyota they have head issues due to heat now so I wouldn't go there in a surf or similar.

Bio Diesel with the correct solvents and additives is a better option but running this in winter can cause issues hard starting etc.

some service stations have a large oil reservoir that they sue for old oil - my work has one, people can come on in to the carpark, walk round the back and empty their oil into the bin. Fulton hogan actually pays for old oil to use in roading, they take ours away.

Go on the hunt around old dairy farms and beg buy steal an old cream separator.
THAT will filter your oil nicely, uses the same principle as the wee centrifugal filter in small honda step-thrus.
The cream separator will take out ALL solids, all you need is an electric motor drive.

The, use the dunny roll filter and I would merely use a gravity feed for THAT. who cares if it takes overnight to filter 20 L?

I'm not sure but sure sounds worth trying. We have a bunch of people inquriring about engines everyday and would be worth some people trying i.

Cummins have been doing it for a while with their centinel extended service system. It removes a small amount of engine oil from sump and puts into tank for burning. They have a seperate tank full of clean engine oil witch gets put into sump to keep oil level up. They are getting 120 000 km between oil changes. Oil is always kept new. Old oil doesn't seem to bother the fuel filters coz they still last 100 000 km.

I have now fitted a fuel heater to my top radiator hose and the car runs even better on the 50-50 mix of used engine oil and diesel and I think I will try 75-25 in summer. Some guys in the states actully run 100% used oil but start and stop on straight diesel.

Thats what I am doing with my Surf, start and stop on diesel and run on 100% veg oil, normal tank for the veg and an auxilary tank for the diesel.

Because I don't have an unimited supply of Vege oil I run a 50/50 blend in my main tank.
in the summer I push it up to 75/25 with no problems

I like the idea of the radiator fuel heater idea ... I think I am going to have a look for a little heat exchanger ...

Hi Dazza,
Are you using new or used oil, if you are using used and you are not heating it you may have problems with fat blocking your filters even if you filter it really well before you put it in your tank. If you are going to keep using a mix then it would probably be a good idea to put your heater just in front of the fuel filter.

The Oil that I am using is contaminated unused oil, I settle out the contaminants and then mix it with diesel
Some types of oil goes solid at a higher temp than others, although none of it actually goes solid it gets noticeably thicker in the cold weather.

Most lube oils contain all sorts of crap that you really don't want to be breathing.
I've been told emissions regs have spelt the end of Cummins Centinal system, the last thing I want to be breathing is burnt zinc compounds from someones used motor or hydraulic oil.
Ask any welder what breathing burnt zinc fumes does.
