Where is the mud playground near Auckland?

Moved up from Chch a while ago and have finally got my toy up and running but can't seem to find anywhere to start breaking it again .

I tried the Ken Sibly Nth Island guide book, but the tracks out west that sounded promising were locked  .

If anyone has any suggestions that would be great as I would like to go out and give the old girl a thrashing or two to iron out any bugs before inflicting myself on any sort of club runs.

One day (sigh.....)

In the mean time do you think you could send up Couts Island for me?
Or perhaps Worsley Spur, if you're not using it?

This is the problem with Auckland. Anything that looks like fun has a "keep out" sign on it. It's getting more and more difficult to even get your truck dirty.

I would recommend you try the run up Muriwai beach to South Head of the Kaipara - good if you like sand - most of the other spots people keep quiet about out of a sense of self-preservation, so you HAVE to join a club. You can also access the other side of Muriwai from the top of South Head.

And I'd move down to the west coast anytime if I could get a job there, and the kids weren't in school...etc etc

Lemme know if you find any - I've been looking for about five years now.

Join a club here would be the easiest way to get access nowadays. All the good spots are thrashed beyond belief because the powers that be have closed everything else down due to overuse and damage - thing is with less places to go the vehicle usage is up and more damage is created so more places closed, etc...

Wish I lived down where the mud flows free as the access roads and not in Auckland land of road closures and petty beaurocrates.

:D On the road between Drury and Pukekohe is a Dead End Road called SIMS Road. It's on the left coming from Drury just before the start of the second over taking lane. If you get to the gas station, golf course and Glenbrook intersection you've gon about 2km too far.
It is only about 1km long but is a sure Mud run after a rain storm.
It is not a "No Exit" as the sign says. It connects up to Sims Road on the other side of the Railway Lines via a small (but good) bridge.

8) Also try the beach out at Kariotahi. Nice to get down to the Waikato Heads.
Tread lightly, keep away from the untouched dunes and be aware of the other beach users.
Get to it via Waiuku.

 There are a few tracks in the maramarua forest. But the most fun Mud Run was the old Meremere Cable Way. Now closed.
When the mud dried you could peel it off like plastic!
Very straight but massive potholes next to where each of the pylons used to be. And I mean MASSIVE ute swallowers!

 Klondyke Road out at Onewhero has nice views looking down at Port Waikato. It eventually drops down to the port. Get there from Tuakau, take the road south out of town, over the river and take the second turning on the right.
Follow this road up the hill for about 10-15 min until your on the other side of Onewhero.
The turn for Klondyke Road is on the road to Wairamarama that you will find yourself on after travelling through Onewhero. About 1 to 2km south out of Onewhero on the Right.
Note: there are 3 roads that drop down to the Port Waikato Road, Klondyke is the 3rd.

Went and had a look at Sims Road today (live in Pukekohe). It's definately closed. The road end from the Drury / Pukekohe road has a locked gate. The other end from Cape Hill Road is also closed. Big signs at both ends stating that the bridge is closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Damn, Sorry about that.
Try the others though.
Especially the Klondyke Road trip on a fine day. 8)
Stunning views over the Port Waikato Area.

Thanks guys. I was planning to head down to check out Simms rd on Sunday, but fortunately a hangover had me pretty much housebound all day :? Pleased I didn't, my truck is quite used to having mud flow through it, but tears at finding a locked gate, thats another matter :(
