Offroad Trailer Ideas - Chch regular trip goers

Post by mike »

Ok just throwing some ideas around here.

Offroad trailer doesnt hinder performance of towing vehicle hardley at all. Now what I have left over as a concequence of my hybrid build is the potential makings of a wicked offroad trailer which I am prepared to dedicate to the site and for members (chch based or visitors) to use.

We mainly run into problems with fuel on our trips due to the big distances involved in our trips down here. We could also take a gas bbq easily :D .

What I have sitting in the driveway. One full range rover chassis about to be sold or scraped what ever comes first. It has one coiled rear with disc brakes and a 90l tank mounted in it. We could, chop this chassis, build a deck and top for it, mount another tank in it. lots of room in it for recovery gear, chain saws (they always leak in peoples vehicles) and room for heaps of jerry cans plus gas bbq  We could also buy fuel where it is cheaper and speed wont be a hinderence as its now 90km/hr and people dont like to drive fast on their muddies anyway. And the best thing I would put in, is a great big piss off airtank for pumping tyres up.

Now does this sound like a good project for the christchurch boyz? I think we can build it on the cheap as the base is already here sitting in my drive. A coil sprung offroad trailer, which carrys fuel, air, bbq, spares, tools.

Just throwing my ideas out there

Sounds like a stunner of an idea if you ask me. Would come in handy for those longer trips

One vote of confidence already :D

forgot to add also have two average SAT 31" tyres on rims that would be perfect for it as they have great sidling holding ability.

Just my 2c worth here, but what about making it a dual axle job, so you can easily winch it accross a river, bog or up a hill, if the need arises. :?:
Like the caravan of Ken Sibleys in his book. :)
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

renting it would be a mission, to much maintenance and organising bookings, pickups, damage, insurance (unless you want to do it  ) etc. Would be pretty much just for the regular trip members who would hopefully build it as well.

Would be good to have two axles but alas dont have the other axle or mounts or wheels for it. Whats here is pretty much the bottom end done.

think it would to much of a hassel taking it on trips, we get stuck enough with just the trucks nevamind with a trailer on the back.. although it would be handy to put fuel etc on it... or perhaps a broken down nissian on it LOL

Trailers if setup right generally dont add many problems.... only difficulty can be tight bends. Think about it, Tim's truck could easily drag a trailer wherever it wants to go ;)

*puts hand in air* oooh oooh, pick me! I need a new project, cos I only have about 4 on the go at the moment...

Happy to do some cutting and welding, and have various bits and pieces (also parts of RR chassis and suspension) lying about.

When do we start - go on! Lets do it today... we'll have it finished by lunchtime :)

haha... I can't resist a new project... In fact about the only thing I do resist is finishing the damn things :)

I have to finish MY cobblestones and painting MY house before the wife would let me go do someone elses :P

Shit, when I think of it like that you'd better bump that project list up to around 12-15 or so...

 better leave that trailer 'till tomorrow morning

I won't talk about the rugby, but there are some other countries where they're into 4 x 4 trailers in a big way. This link might be interesting, just for ideas about what you can weld on to your fantasy trailer!
