Post by mudda-trucker »

ok .. ive started to run my hilux desiel 2l on recycled oil. only hassle is every time i go for a drive i get the craving for fish & chips :). any ways with winter the oil is to thick and needs thinning down .. i need to make or get a fuel cell with a 12v heating element in it. dose any one know where i can get one from? or do you have any other idears for heating the oil.

why not make a heat exchanger that goes over the exhaust, you could put a tight fitting pipe over the exahust and then a bigger one and blank them off either end and an inlet one end and outlet the other. wouldnt have to be big. might work to well

Just a chicken vs. egg thing, but the heat exchanger on the exhaust aint gonna work... its never going to heat the oil enough to start or run it because its not running to heat it up... and so on and so on :)

Something electrical will kill the battery in no time unless its almost like a glow plug timer setup and is just used to get the oil flowing, and the boys in blue aren't going to think much of a gas burner bolted up under the fuel tank :P

I'm fresh outta good ideas tho...

Many years ago some enterprising people ran there cars on alternative fuels during the gasless days . Bmc 1300 on something like diesel .

Anyway they had the main tank full of the alt stuff but had to have a small secondary tank to start the car on . Just swapped over to the proper stuff to start and once warm back to the alt stuff . The smart ones also shut down there cars on the good stuff , much like you used to have to do with cng etc .

This way a heat exhanger will work and it will still start well etc

Most fire trucks have a heating element in the sump, with a power cord which is plugged into mains power so it is always up to temp when they start up. If you have enough room in the sump to clear the crankshaft, you could put an electric jug element in the bottom, & plug into the wall for a couple of minutes before starting. Otherwise, wrap an old electric blanket around the sump overnight??

Good luck, with the way fuel prices are going it won't be long before we're all being followed by cats and dogs as we head down the road.

Hi All,
The Bio Diesel option begs the question!!
Was out shoppin with the wife last night  and ran into a family whose children she teaches. Met the Dad Duncan for the first time, swapped names and the usual "So what do you do??" and low and behold he makes bio diesel for a crust.
It might be a point of contact for those of you wanting to make some as he knows of where you can buy kits as well as the ins and outs of the fancy chem stuff! :)
His name is Duncan Berwick
Bio Clean Green Fuels
bio.fuels@xtra.co.nz
027 202 3069
Apparently he is making it by the ton and it is all sold. I wonder why??

The current FUEL obsession

Post by forester »

Now why shouldn't we just run our Diesel trucks on any old oil? I know that in previous trials they have run diesels for ages on plain old sunflower oil (in South Africa during the 1970 fuel crisis)....

I've run my Hilux on chainsaw bar lube on one occasion...not by choice, and it's a LONG story.

I suppose the rough oil will stuff the injectors eventually? What other problems will it cause? I figure we can solve most problems by running one tank fish oil, one tank diesel, and changing the fuel filter more often.

It's just if you're getting the oil for free or cheap, a set of new injectors now and again kinda makes sense, innit?

Besides, I'm sure my missus wouldn't want me out in the backyard playing with Methanol and Sodium Hydroxide... first one makes you blind, the second one blinds you.....

More on Biodiesel

Post by forester »

Have been researching this topic a little bit. Found a really good website with clear instructions for making your own biodiesel - follow the link

http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_a ... l#easymeth

This is a helluva interesting link, even if you don't end up making any biodiesel.

Seems like you can do it easily enough, but it pays to get it right!

Answers to other questions:

Is veggie oil ok? Seems not. Very thick, increased pressure roots the injectors and diesel pump eventually. Not the thing to do unless you are a diesel mechanic. :?

Other critical factors? Biodiesel needs to be washed and filtered before use, and you HAVE to check the pH. Alkaline biodiesel will seriously screw with the diesel fuel system, pays to make sure it is slightly acid before use.

Anyone had a go making biodiesel?

Seemed nice and straight forward till I started to read this...blah blah explosions blah blah blah dangerous blah blah blah horrible accident blah blah blindness and death.

I kinda went off the idea from there

"CAUTION

Sulfuric acid is a DANGEROUS CHEMICAL. Take full safety precautions, wear safety goggles, gloves and apron and eye protection. Have running water nearby. Don't inhale fumes!

If you run out of sulfuric acid NEVER try to make up the required volume with nitric acid. It may form small quantities of nitroG (nitroglycerine) -- even the smallest amount can cause horrible accidents. See: High Explosives

Methanol can cause blindness and death, and it is absorbed through the skin. Sodium hydroxide can cause severe burns and death. Together these two chemicals form sodium methoxide. This is an extremely caustic chemical. These are dangerous chemicals -- treat them as such! Always have water running nearby when working with them. The workspace must be thoroughly ventilated. No children or pets allowed. Wear safety goggles, gloves and apron and eye protection. Do not inhale any vapors. See Safety for further information."

set up cost ... 100lt hot water clinder (from the recycles) $30- new heater element $40- Methanol $80 for 20lt or $310 for 200lt- costic soda $26 for 20kg, and depends where you get your oil from it cost me $40 for 200lt.
+ say $200 for extra bits -

its working out for me at $0.37 per lt (+my time) take about 5 hrs over 4 days as i also work full time.

Yeah, I figured it was do-able. It seems to be all about whether it's worthwhile to spend the time doing the work. I reckon if diesel gets to $1.50 a litre we'd be mugs not to have a go.

Besides, there's something cool about getting fuel with your fish 'n chips....

Is that a steel hot water cylinder, mudda? Is it galvanised?
