I went up the Harper river the other day. Set up my fly camp, started getting my gear ready, when a white hughes 500 came buzzing down from the cass saddle and went upstream from where I was. This wasn't too much of a problem as I could still hunt downstream. I got my gear on for a evening shot, walked about 500m from my camp and the bugger came back buzzed me :evil:

, and proceeded down stream at tree top level looking for deer. With that buggered I headed around to the Avoca in the dark and set up at basins stream. Saw a bit of sign, nothing too exciting though. Managed to bag a couple of hares for dog tucker on the way home.

You should have, by now, a White Hughes helicopter at the taxidermists, don't you think?
You MAY have to build a bigger room on your house to display it properly.

as an aside, Siwsie and I were watching a program on tv, Country Colander, and the smart young thing heading the program spoke of Wapiti/Elk cross deer.
I nearly pissed meslf rolling around laughing!! Oh ye of little knowledge and diplaying it for all the world to see!!

sorry to sound like a know it all but that cross does exsist,. they cross a wapiti hind with an elk bull and the result is the head of a wapity on the body of an elk but it only works that way around and any hint of red blood in either of the sires and they come out with pink spots :lol:

we go up to a friends house out hamarana, every couple of weeks and we bag ourselves about 9 hears and about10 or so possums. We are just discussing how to make a fur plucker to pluck the possums haha.

went out tiwce last week for a evening duck shoot we ended up wif 30 ducks and 15 swans. not to bad for two shooters.

Heading away this weeknd for a deer and a few goats to.

Interesting, but as I said, i was only interested, dont really give a bugger!!
of all the game birds, the ones i like hunting (eating) best are californian quail.
When I lived in tokorioa, we had a long season to the end of August and no limit. great fun

Not wanting to thread jack but how do you get on with the steel shot. I've tried it and had poor results compared with lead, both with range stopping power.

Steel Alrite on the ducks. Deffinatly led on the Geese to knock them over.

took me a while to work the steel out but now i find it works really well, the secret with the steel is speed, but it is expensive. I use the 3 inch loads and the good stuff which fires at 1550, the cheaper stuff only does about 1200.
First couple of seasons i didn't hit much with the steel but since i got my wallet out and got the good stuff i often find the pelets go through one side and out the other. It does kick like a mule though youno about it with the 5 shot when you unlease all 5 in a few seconds.

i use a skeet choke in my semi and kent 3' 2shot. they do 1550fps and i am very very happy with this set up.
Me and a mate had no problems dropping black swans with this load.

I think people need to use a wider choke and call your ducks in closer!!!!

Back Ridge..that brings back some memories of a nightmare trip...up Makahu spur to kaweka J, along to mad dog, then down to Kiwi creek(bushbash) :roll:

then up to Back Ridge biv...fkn took hours, got ther in the pitch black, sore as fawk, and no interest in chasing Jappers at all after that :mrgreen:

reminds me of mine and pappys trip... up the spur then allong to ballards then to kelvinator then to rocks ahead then to back ridge biv then to back ridge then to studholmes then back up to the tops where i rolled a nice hind right up in the tussok on the tops (nice) then down to the car...that was a walk and a half :shock:

was a primo walk !

looking forward to middle ill...might head over to the half way house to see what condition its in

and see if my stag still lives in there :wink:
