And what reasons are those?
I did quite a bit of research b4 buying this terrano over a hilux and almost all of the x4 places I asked said they were better than the equivilent hilux, less problems and cheaper to fix and they almost all said that if well maintained the 2.7 td engine was pretty bullet proof,so what are the typical problems???thx
Could't agree more!!!
Commen problems with the TD27 is the water pump, valve gear and EGR.
Water pumps tend to corrode the housing, use good anti freeze.
Rocker shafts and rockers tend to ware quite easily if the right spec oil isn't used for the Jap diesels, high magnisium content in oil required.
EGR tends to clog the intake manifold and make it smoke, especially when hot and left to idle for a while.
Other than that, they are as bullet proof as the turbo charged TD42.
If you have one with a manual trans, make sure you can get 5L of oil into it before it starts comming out the level plug.
On some earlier modles, and some of later ones, depending on what was left over at the factory, the level plugs were positioned to low and the bearings in the box didbn't get enough lubrication. Took about 3L. Thats the reason they got a name for having weak gearbox's
They realised this in the later modles and repositioned the plug higher up on the box and increased the capacity to 5l.
You can put the extra in by removing the gear lever if you have an early modle box.
With bigger tyres the steering system flex's and bends. Not pretty.
Alot of people make idler arm braces and buy a new center link and gusset it over in the states. You are usually ok up to 33's before you have problems.
Remove all the sway bars, especialy the rear, add two new rear 50mm raised height springs in the rear, crank the front end up, cut the front bump stops in half, make a gaurd up to cover the very prone and rediculously placed sump and get out their skidding!!!!
Terrano's are great!!!!!

less problems and cheaper to fix

A Hilux is possibly the cheapest and easiest 4WD to modify or fix of any on the planet. There are millions of them out there, they take bits from various other Toyota vehicles and they are basic and easy to work on.
Having said that, the terrano 2.7 diesel is recognised as being pretty reliable and they are nice enough to drive. They just have no ground clearance and no articulation to speak of. And the silly square design of the wheel arches means that fitting big tyres becomes a mission...
(ducks, runs for cover... let the flame war begin

Totally dissaggree with the articulation Steve, the coils in the rear make up lack or travel in the front, BUT, you are limited as to what you can do to improve it from there.
Hilux, sky is the limit.
I fitted 32 X 9.5 R15 centipedes (we all know the measure at 33.4")to mine with only 50mm raised coils. It was fine.
Hilux needs a Body Lift to do that, or take a hammer to the fire wall.
One raised, every thing is tucked up between the chassis rails, no low hanging crossmembers or fuel tanks
Solid front and rear axle definatly has way more potential to be better though

Agreed, although I know which I'd rather take to with a hammer to the inner guard area... nice shiney Terrano or beat up old Hilux...
Having said that, I just cut a shiney '96 MU to pieces to add Hilux bits, so I can't really say that with any great conviction
Everyone has their fav. trucks, and all trucks have their good and bad points - hell, I hate Isuzus and love Hiluxes... so what do I drive now?..
Anyway, I think this thread used to be about rusty floors in Terranos... I would think the best solution would be to plasma out the old double-skin floor and have a panel shop replace it with a single piece one if its already rusty, otherwise look at WHY they go rusty then attack that before it does. Hiluxes rust around the body mounts by the drivers and front passengers feet. Water pools there and the carpets keep it wet so simple solution - remove the carpet and drill a drain hole, then paint it to stop the new hole rusting and remove a patch of the underlay around that area then put the carpet (well, vinyl) back down - or better still just remove it all and leave it out - easier to hose the mud out after a trip
