After having had my Surf out recently in some rougher terrain, I have found I don't have as much low down power to help clear obstacles, trying to go slow to manoeuvre through rocks etc is awkward as I am stalling and having to slip the clutch too much.
I am trying to decide whether I should install 4.7 gears in the transfer case or go for a dual transfer setup.
A dual adapter is cheaper to buy but also means more money to modify drive shafts cross member etc, where as 4.7 gears are a bit more to buy but incur no other cost to set up.
Dual transfers means I can choose normal low range or low, low range, where as with the gears I am limited to one low range ratio.
What I am trying to decide is, Is fitting 4.7 gears to the transfer going to be too limiting off road? My truck is not a rock crawler but I do tackle a fair bit of rocky/rough terrain. But we also take the kids out down the river and tackle a few muddier spots on our trips away. So a bit of everything if you get what I mean?
2.8 Supra
4.88 ratio diffs
35 inch tyres.
Any thoughts???
Duals or gears?
Re: Duals or gears?
Go the duals. You have already answered you own query smurf. If you are not going hard arse all the time, you might as well have as many ratio choices as you can.
Then when you need even more, you slap the 4.7's in one of the dual cases
(PS, haven't forgotten about the AFM, just have been a bit slack, sorry
)

Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

Cheers, Rok.
I think duals is the way to go....just trying to convince myself that it is.
Just means more cost to get it done before cert. where as going to 4.7s I can tackle it when ever.
But more available gears sounds better.
Re: Duals or gears?
I had that same problem so I got both
roks right you will be better off going for duals
