Non-Road Legal LPG Install Q's

Whats the deal with non-road legal (Trials) vehicles and doing LPG conversions??

From what little i can find on the topic, it would appear all you need is a tested and current tank.

I would think that as the vehicle is not subject to any form of registration, WOF or certification as its not for use on public roads, logic would suggest it therefore doesn't require LPG certs or WOF's.

The catch may then be, that if you rock up the servo and go to fill you trials vehicle thats sitting on the trailer, an attendant may go looking for the LPG cert or WOF, and on not finding it may refuse to allow you to fill the vehicle up.

The way i see it is that, on a non road legal vehicle, provided you have a LPG tank that is tested and still current, then its no different to heading in to the servo with your BBQ gas bottle or gas heater bottle and getting it filled.

Is that how it works????

Where's Mark BlackCruiser, he run's LPG................. :D

We have to run a lpg Cert for the National rally, we did not have a lpg Cert prior and never had any probs filling up, JC at JC Autos said they cant refuse to fill your tank if you have no LPG Cert you will not pass your next WOF. He is an LPG Certifier so would take his word over others, bolt it in and go for it since you dont need a wof.

If you are worried about filling it with no LPG cert use a forklift type bottle which can be taken off. Then just the bottle needs to be tested just like your BBQ

Cheers, yeah all that makes sense.

I have been wading through trademe for a fork lift type bottle, as it would allow me to take the cyclinder to get filled rather than having to load the truck onto the trailer and take the whole truck down to get filled.

Any thoughts on where to get hold of a second hand bottle??

Was thinking that if i could run a fork lift type bottle, that would mean i could also hook up smaller BBQ size bottles as well, which would mean i could carry spare fuel on long bush trips.

Why not just run a 9 or 12 kg bbq bottle ? A blue suzuki runs one of these . Would last forever on th 50 :D . Then worst case you have on back at the truck to swap out on a long day/weekend . Can ask the old man what the biggest bottle he can get is and at what price .

Just quietly, its not exactly for the 50.

I have an LPG system with an 80L tank thats all set up and running.

The cyclinder supposedly has 3 years left on it, but i can't find any proof as such on the tank itself.

I'm not worried about having to get the tank re-tested, thats just a running expence.

The reason i asked the original question, was because i wasn't sure whether to bother trying to bring the LPG system up to spec (thought it could be more than just getting the tank tested), or change it back to petrol (it's dedicated LPG).

So it now seams that the system it's self is going to be fine, provided the tank is has a current test cert thingy ;)

Thats fine i will get the tank tested again.

Ideally though, having a more readily removeable tank would be ideal, so i can wip the tank out and get it filled before an event/trip, rather than having to call in somewhere on the way and fill up. Plus the added bonus of being able to carry spare fuel.

Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong here coz the only LPG I ever get is the odd 9kg bottle filled but I remember someone telling me a while ago that if your buying standard retail LPG from the gas station they charge you more for the LPG if they fill it into a portable bottle than they do to fill a vehicle LPG tank?

I've never bothered to try and work out if theres a difference coz the charge by the kg for portable bottles and by the litre for vehicles? :?:

Correct
9kg of gas =/= 9L
1.418L/kg
So when you buy 9kg of LPG, you're actually buying 12.76L, which at current prices here @ $1.15 = about $15
Which is why I fill my 9kg bottles from my Range Rover's LPG tank

Not quite correct....specific gravity of LPG is around 0.535 for general mix (60/40), so you get about 2l/kg. Most 9kgs get around 18 litres per fill.
