hey all my 2lt 1988 surf is over boosting when i put my foot down and the revs get to about 3 g my read turbo light comes on. anyone have a working waist gate laying around on an old blown engine or something? I just dont want to blow my engine up as im going to be selling my beast shortly:( going to move overseas and do some skippering so i can come back and buy a monster.
or does anyone know any other engines you can rip the waist gate off of and put on the 2lt?
thanks chris

should be hundreds of these things lying around wreckers, backyards, local dump...etc
check that its not seized or split the hose.

First of all i'm no mechanic... so don't rely on this... and i've never had a turbo diesel but have had plenty of turbo petrol cars. I found that when i had problems with the pressure not being let go it was usually becasue the actuator had clogged up with shit rather than the wastegate itself jamming shut... disconnect the actuator arm and try to move the wastegate lever thingee and see if it is stuck, if it isn't then you just need a new actuator (might save you having to pull the turbo off to find out it was moving freely anyway) and then all you need is the actuator;-) an actuator off anything that runs the same factory boost should do the job (I think) you will just have to check that the arm length is the same so it actually opens the gate when it tries to (if you try to open a door with your arm while standing 3m away from it you will have problems) and that the mounting points are the same...
Wait for somebody else to verify what i've said about changing actuators etc before doing it but the rest should hopefully be helpfull;-)
Please tell me if i'm wrong but don't shoot me i'm just trying to help and i did say i'm no mechanic;-)

The wastegate actuator is basically a spring that holds the wastegate closed under say 8 pounds pressure, When boost occurs the boost is fed into the orther side of the actuator counteracting the spring (in simple terms) so basicaly the arm should be sprung in one direction and move about 2 cm or so.
If it is staying closed and overboosting then the vacuum boost line to the actuator is usualy split or has fallen off.
This is usualt the line that ppl tee off for a boost guage, the good thing is Diesels can overboost and run leaner (they still do get more heat into the upper manifold) it is the manifold temps you need to watch.

sweet thanks for that i think the actuator is split cause every once in awhile i find some fresh oil around it. know of anyone that has a spare actuator?

check you vaccum line feeding the actuator is thats not split id say the diaphram inside will be. measure the lenth of you actuator arm i have one lying around at home off a rb20det out of a nissan it might work
