Conans truck goes Supra-Falcon-SAS

Post by SupraLux »

Well, figured I had better throw some photos of Conans truck up to keep him happy while he waits down in QT for it to be finished.

The old donk is out, and the new donk is sitting in front of it awaiting the suspension to be finished, which is now virtually done.

Its sitting on shagged springs, so the current rears will come up front to replace them, and 'coons will go in the back to replace them.

Heres a few pics of the SAS.

Here it is sitting on its new (real) springs... no more IFS :)

Here is the crossmember:

Conan has some other photos of the cleaning up process (grinding and polishing :) ) which I'm sure he'll add...

What makes you think they won't?

The penetration is good, and the welds are fullt around the mounts. Theres more weld in these ones than in many of the factory ones.

The front crossmember still has some bracing to go on yet.

Yeah, 31"s look a bit widdly on a sas conversion - still I can sell you my new 36"s for $2500 on rims :)

Oh, and that can of speights is a welding aid... its to offset how my welding bracing magnet on the other bumper is not quite square... when I drink my welding goes a bit off sqare in the other direction... hey presto! Perfect welding :D

Ok, bit more progress on Conans truck. The engine is in the hole, on mounts I made all by myself out of tin cans since thats all my welder can do... should be ok unless you take it off road - the Coke might fizz up and blow the mounts apart... :P

Image

Note the remounted alternator - much easier to replace if it breaks - and its well out of the way of most normal mud... in the factory position it requires triple-jointed fingers, three hands and half the front of the truck stripped down just to get at it... The power steer pump is relocated to where the alternator was with a remote reservoir up in the usual place.

Now I just need to do about a million more small tidy-up jobs and its ready to go :)

hi Steve,
my alternator has crapped out twice since my repower, I find If I take out the radiator it is easily removed from the underside, but like the position you have moved that one too!
P.S my regulator crapped out first time, couldn't get a 5mge alternator anywhere, so bought one off a 1G, was going to try and remount it as the housings are different. On closer inspection I found all the internals are identical :!:
Just swap out the internals into the 5m alternator haousing and away you go
Same with the starter :!: motor is the same as the 1g, just change the front where it bolts to the bellhousing :!:
hey mind if I drop down to the shed and have a look at how you have remounted Conan's :?:

No worries - I'm down there this arvo from about 2pm onwards... would be good to have a look at your truck too - haven't seen it for a while.

Yeah - lots of Toyota stuff is like that... I used an un-named one off (the wrecker thought) some 4-cylinder corolla to replace the last broken Supra one I had - just needed a thick washer to space the main pivot bolt mount and everything else went in fine :)

Thats the good old 5MG Supra swap... a straight 6, 160HP toyota motor :)

I got a bit more done too... heres the shocks I'm going to use compared to factory front shocks... should provide far better travel:
Image

And the steering... got the relay rod machined to fit a 40-series draglink and fitted a Hilux tierod end to the other end of it:

And on the truck:

Closeup of the new bit:

And overview of the knuckle:

I like the use of the double steering arms. Did you have double ended conicle washers made up for it. Thats the one thing that stopped me going spring over on the front of the 60 series.

It might just be the photo angle but your drag link looks mighty close to the chassis rail jsut above the steering knuckle. Are you going to a taller spring and bigger bump stops? Its a pity the taper in the steering knuckle isn't the other way round.

Magic work mate!!

I had longer HT studs machined up and used 2 sets of cone washers to lock both arms, with machined spacers between. The drag link is close, but those springs are knackered and they are past flat, so its not a big issue. Theres still 40mm or so of travel before it hits, and it will hit the sump at the same time, so I'll bump-stop limit it about 25mm before it hits.

This idea has been tested and abused in a 40-series so its not an original idea, but should be fully certable and safe as houses when done.

More progress after a full on weekend down working on the Surf. Conan was there and spent about 12 hours lovingly and painstakingly rebuilding the axle from the ground up, fitting the new diff and armouring the front of the housing (a process which took 4-odd hours on its own) using about 47 separate pieces of intricately cut steel and 3kg of mig wire :P Theres also about 5 layers of paint on here... I think Conan was a tagger in a former life... every time I turned around there he was with a spray can in his hand
Image

Meanwhile I was working on the front crossmember and mounts to finish it off so I could get on to the falcons in the back. Here it is finished - anyone care to comment? :P
Image

I think the 35"s look far better than the 31"s... I'll ramp this with the Simexes when its done I think... just for effect... Then I'll make Conan take them off and put his wee 31"s back on... just for effect :D *insert sadistic smile here*
Image

And heres the steering setup and a fitted shock... Just the shock towers and the driveshaft to go and the front is done. Conan is working on clearancing the IFS driveshaft to fit - with a backup plan of throwing it in the bin in disgust and buying a Hilux one :P

awww shucks  ... you're just saying that..

..don't stop tho :P lmao...

I'm heading down today to bolt up the other falcon and then start fabbing the rear mounts up. Cut them off yesterday, just need to make up some blocks to lower them then some custom shackles to suit the eye on the springs.

Somewhere in all of this I still need to finish the MU for next weekend too... *sigh*

Well, here is the motor in, bolted up and ready to start. Wires have been cut, twisted and aligator clipped together in a visual symphony of colour and confusion... Thanks Mike - I hate this job :P
Image

Then theres the ass-end... getting the 'coons sorted. I have built the rear mount droppers ready to go on, and made them a little taller than normal which should help balance the lift in the front without making it unduly wallowy by having to make super-long shackles.
Image

And the front mount welded in position with the brace:
Image

And here is a wee movie clip (need Windows Media Player I think) of the engine start with no exhaust. Conan pulled the fuel tank but never bothered to refit it before buggering off on holiday so its running on some dodgy little hoses straight from a jerry can under the truck, and is starving when you give it herbs, so idle is all you get :P

As for the MU... well, Conan needs to drive this home in a few days... so unfortunately once again the MU is parked and waiting. *sigh*

Well, more work this weekend... got the falcons in and finished:
Image

Then stood back and looked... not too bad:
Image

Nice, but a bit boring... lets try and tip it over :D
Image

And the other way just for good measure:
Image

A bit of tidying up to do, fuel tank to go in, shock towers, nerfs and rear shocks and its pretty much done - apart from the computer still sitting on the top of the motor - but Conan can do that when he gets back :)

4days of working till god knows when. I'm knackered... but Conan is currently somewhere between Oamaru and Queenstown on the road. Its done and running sweet. small overheat mishap with what seems to be a stuck thermostat - removed on the side of the road and off again.

The shock towers are in the front, the shocks are remounted in the rear and the truck is done. Loom tidied up and computer in under the dash.

Seemed to be running well, not too rolly in the corners and flexing damn well. Due to being totally wiped out by the time it was all done I forgot to take any finished product photos but there are a few of the flex it was getting just before the shocks were fitted.

This was climbing in 2WD as the front driveshaft is not in...

I'm sure Conan will post pics of it all back together.
