Kumho KL71 vs Maxxis Buckshot

Hi team,
We are in the market for some 33" tyres for our 92 SWB Pajero. I keep researching and looking at reviews on the KL 71's and the Buckshots. I was wondering if there were any bias/unbias opinions on either of these brands.
My research has revealed good and bad comments on both tyres. I am usually in the mud so thought, based on the reviews, the kumhos would be the answer. My only thought now is that I am aware different tyres react differently on different vehicles.
Any of you pajero owners running either of the above sets of tyres and have you got any preference or thoughts?
Cheers

I found the Kumhos a good all round tyre especially in mud and snow. You will never get a perfect tyre. Not sure on the maxxis though. May come down to price difference.

Have put KL-71's on the rear of my Prado.
(Rear only due to current finances) Currently running 70% worn BFG MT's on the front.
I find the KL-71's work well in mud and are excellant on road where sadly most of my driving gets done. They seem to be wearing well too.
The only negative that I see is that they spin up at the lights over a painted stop sign a lot more than the BFG's MT's did.
Have no experience with Maxxis's other than as damn good MTB tyres.

Two completely different tyres, for off road traction, go Kumho. A better comparison in my opinion would be the Maxxis Bighorn, not the Buckshot.
I have run Buckshots, and apart from the price and them being high milage tyres, I wouldn't go back.
Bid on these, for this price they would be a great buy, he has another listing for the same tyre/size and they are $80ea more

Cheers for that. On price I am starting to lean toward the Buckshots.
I will post the final decision

Totally agree, mine suffered large cuts in the sidewalls with little use.
What price are the Buckshots, and what type of use will they be getting?

I would have said BFG 33 x 10.5R15 but I went and priced some the other day and they have had a major price increase...
They are a true 33 inch tyre, the other two you mentioned measure about 32.
I would be buying the buckshots on tread type but some of that tread type can be very noisy on the road (ie GT Adventro). The BFG's are not excessively noisy and dispite the price I think I'd buy them again. If they are selling some cheap when the new MT arrives I may be tempted.

Hi team,
Yep going for the Buckshots, based on price and performance reviews. I hear what you are saying about road noise, but this is a recreational vehicle and not family transport so not overly concerned. At the worst I can turn the stereo up.
I had a look at the bighorns and the side bite is really good, but the price leaves us lacking a bit. The KL71s were in there as well, but to get them at a reasonable price they had to be sourced from out of town and with freight charges they sort of lost there appeal.
So Buckskots on new steel rims and the body lift. Well we are gettting there!!

"Buy Tyres Online <info@buytyresonline.co.nz>
hi again
i can get the BFG 33 10.5 R15 TA KM (muds)
would be around the $300+ gst on special order , about 5 week or so.
I dont buy from the New Zealand wholesalers , i bring my own in .
Let me know if thats a competitive price.
Would like to look after you where i can.
If you know of another one in that size let me know.
The BFG is 32.8 inches OD and will run happily on the 7 inch."
Dam tempted but I have a good set of Kumho MT 31x10.5x15 on 15x7 Nissan Steel spoked to wear out first.
Then its replace with the BFG or get some 15x8 rims and something bigger...

i put 33x12.5x15,s bfg,s on the safari today, 307 +gst a peice fitted etc.
after months of looking at tyres, pros and cons, decided on thease
they actually measure about 33.5 inflated was a major plus, they are known for wearing well on road too.

Cheers northland_pajero. I am on a limited budget. The bucks come in at $260 incl plus rims at $95 incl. Well you can add it all up. Thats from one of our local guys. I guess I could shell a little more, but where do you stop! As we are new to the sport and trying to get a basic truck set up that is functional and safe for the family I think we will give the bucks a go.
I guess the worst is the end up on tradme in a few months, but I doubt it. I am confident I have done my research ( usually my downfall, too much research) and with cost etc calculated in I think this a good deal for us.

Do you have 15 inch wheels already which you are running on?
You can keep those rims if you run with 33 x 10.5 BFG's. I can vouch for their biting performance on a Paj

Hi NJV6,
Yep we did have some 15" factory alloys. But I let these go with the tyres. I felt I would rather go with some new steel rims.
I am happy with the decision in view of my budget and I have discussed this with a couple of other 4wd's. Yep I agree could get better but for our budget and for what we are doing at the moment they fit well. However once fitted and tested i will report back into this thread and let you all know what I think of the Buckshots. In saying that the previous tyre was a 31" Savero AT, so I guess the Buckshots will be fantastic after those.
On the side. Part of my budget still has to cover new front and rear bars, CB and a winch. So we are stretching the dollar out. Glad of the tax reduction in the budget so maybe the winch will get here sooner! haha
Cheers

No worries!
I'll be interested to see what rear bar you come up with.... The factory rear is a solid bugger and has taken some good knocks. I haven't seen one I like yet from all the ones I have seen. Makes it even harder once you have a body lift to get something to fit as the sides raise up so far and leave an ugly gap.
O - and I am a fussy barstard!

Not that I want to promote a particular tyre outlet but The off-road guarantee that Tony's offer is hard to beat.
If you have not yet bought your tyres I would take the quote into Tony's who state they will better all prices by $10 per tyre.
For $30 per tyre Tony's give you an 4wd Off-road guarantee that covers
any damage for the
complete life of the tyre. This includes sidewall cuts, which other posts have mentioned can be a problem.

Although I've never had to use it, it is good insurance.
My 33 MTR's only cost me $1300 with new rims and the insurance cover, and although some aren't fans of the Goodyears, I found that deal hard to turn down, not sure what other brands they have though

$30? thats gone up heaps since i was working there. used to be $5 a tyre. any tyre. any damage, as long as it was still warrentable.
used to get people coming in with 4 slashed tyres, and only bout 3mm tread on them... then it would happen again 6mths down the track... how unlucky were those people??
used to piss me right off!

Right, we fitted the Maxxis Buckshots this week.
Went for a quick trip up Thomos this morning to check them out. Was more than chuffed with the decision to go with the Bucks. Unfortunately I really can't compare them with to much as the last set of tyres we were on were 31" AT's. But in saying that I was pretty happy with the performance we had today.
Big test will come next week. Also had to shorten the front bumper by removing the plastic corners. Still not really sure what to do with the front bumper. I think I would like to design and have built a new front bar. Any thoughts or photos of ideas etc would be appreciated. Quick snap in a play area at Thomos this morning (Cheers xj)

Also have decided to stick with the rear bar at this stage
