was talking to my mate karl the other day and hes just put his "slightly" modded fj40 on the dyno to sort out some issues .seems the dyno guy had a smile from ear to ear when he started reading of some of the numbers .how does 3940 nm of torque sound at about 1300 rpm!!!!!!!!. by slightly modded i mean port injected 454 big block chev controlled by a link computer,bedford truck gearbox ,homemade transfer (gears and case etc),ford 9 inch diffs front and back heavily modded,ford puddle jumper (ww2 era) front cvs and outers clutch lockers fr and back,4 wheel fiddle brakes (the list can go on for a while but you get the jist of it).older 4wd people might remember it if they followed the rally scene.its called "the truk" and we use to rally it in the 90ies .dyno guy was worried as his dyno only handles 4000 nm

Big wheel torque numbers just mean he's got a lot of reduction.

I think I'd beat that. 520Nm at the crank, 5.8:1 first gear, 3.32:1 transfer, 3.54:1 diffs would give me 35,000Nm
I'd lose maybe 40% through the drivetrain, but I'd still get over 21,000Nm.

Completely useless though, past about 3000Nm at the wheels and they're spinning up.

this was in top gear.they tried to dyno it in 2wd but dyno couldn,t handle it .had to make more 2 hub adaptors so all four wheels could be hooked up at once

The dyno operator hasn't done his sums right, you need to divide the wheel torque by every gear and diff ratio in between.
According to the interweb those big old V8's only got 380 ft-lbs (515Nm) from the factory and you might get another 100Nm or so if you've done everything possible to them (resonance tuned intakes etc).
State of the art petrol engines can only just beat 100Nm/litre without forced induction.

If you can get the power the dyno recorded, then you can work back through to flywheel torque.

That Land Cruiser of your mate's Karl is a beast. Remember that from many years ago when it used to be on the trial scene. Used to go well back then too and it was (still is??) road legal. The sound of that big block is just awesome, a real ground shaker.
This would be on the water dyno at International Dynamometers in Alicetown? (judging by the description of having to make adaptors to fit the hubs).

Yesterday here in ausy we went to the brisbane power cruise. There was a nissan patrol there with 410 hp and 7000!!! ft lbs of torque! running 32 pounds of boost, thru a duramax v8 diesel! Thats the most torque the dyno guy said he had ever seen!.

The patrol looked stock apart from the radiator was in the back and 32' wheels and that was about it. oh and a cage and lifted suspension.

I think you have an extra 0 in your torque figures. 410hp at 3000rpm is 700 ft-lbs.

Isuzu need to release a 4 cylinder version of the duramax. 3.3 litres with 200hp and 500Nm would make a lot of friends and fit in a lot more vehicles.

Someone's telling porkies if they're claiming 7000ft-lbs.
Power is torque multiplied by rpm.
410hp at 3000rpm is 700 ft-lbs.

i also remember a trial in Levin i think, the "truk" enter's a bog, nails it, dump pipes open up, all hell breaks loose, bog is now 50 feet in air, clears hazard, the only vehicle to do so, he then gets a protest against him "cause the pipes opening up gave him more power" pretty sure it was thrown out with a lot of laughter, very impressive when dump pipes are open it winds out.
