Here's something that you all can think about over the weekend....

If you have not already done so, we urgently need your help to prevent the loss of Central Otago's magical landscapes. The threat is real, looming over us ominously in the form of hundreds of 160m high turbines which will transform our big sky vistas and tussock-laden ridges into energy production landscapes.

If one windfarm is consented, it will be very difficult to stop others - a precedent for consent will be formed. The windrush will be unstoppable.

But its not too late and many of us are doing our utmost to preserve the essence of Otago.In the Environment Court over the past 10 days we have watched first-hand the bullying by Meridians lawyers and their attempts to discredit our witnesses.We have only a tiny fraction of the funds of Meridian, but our legal team are doing an admirable job presenting our case and defending the outstanding natural landscapes of the Central Otago District.

It is unbelievable that the Department of Conservation and the Regional Councils are supporting windfarms in Otago, succumbing to government pressures and agendas is Kyoto more important than our best asset, our landscape?

While windfarms might look good on the international stage, they will do little to alleviate any power shortage in New Zealand they rely on nature and the wind often doesn't blow when you need it (it has been largely calm in Central for months now).

The Environment Court will soon move on to the second phase of the Appeal in which the landscape values will be pitched against the national good argument.

If you believe, like us, that the need for power does not warrant the loss of Central Otago's natural, outstanding landscapes, and that there are many other options for increasing supply or reducing power demand, then please show us your support and help fund the fight.

while i aggree with you in many ways...

the need for power as you said, is not a need but a demand from the country. the other options are...

build another hydro by damming the Waimak ?
build a dirty big coal fired thermal station down there ?
comission a big gas fired plant and run it on what ? diesel ? ....

i think the wind farms are a much greener and more apealing idea

the other option is of course TURN OFF YOUR LIGHTS,HEATERS,ELECTRIC BLANKETS,AND COOK OVER A FIRE

Heaven forbid that they actually build hydro generation where there is the most consistent rainfall, and plenty of suitable areas, i.e the West Coast.

i think the 'nimby' thing plays a huge part here too, noone wants a huge windfarm in their backyard, but at the end of the day it will go where they want, ie far away from their ceo's and relevant mp's etc.

the central otago vista? in my opinion, massively over rated. you seen one sun baked rock covered hill you seen them all. we used to holiday there every christmas and school holidays, and the only interesting part was watching the dam be built. the most boring scenery ever.

just my humble opinion of course.....

so anyway, as this is the thread for the weekends acievements, I thought I'd get it back on track sort of............

I woke up this morning in my nice warm bed and wandered to the shitta for a whizz in my nice warm house as the heat pump had warmed it nicely and then had a nice hot shower and got dressed for work in my nice toasty warm clothes and then wandered outside to see a mean frost and thought how COLD it must of been overnight for those fullas who were tenting it up at Rallywoods, coz whatever the temp is at my house would guarantee to be 5 degrees colder in the bush. OUCH.

good luck to them.

and as for the rest of the weekend, I plan to do a bit of maintanence on the VX and stop the water leak and make it 4wd again

lol, and yeah weekends achievements.... waterblasted the whale, found out that last weekends damage is worse that i thought, stoved in a taillight, and wrecked the sill under the drivers door, shit, thats gonna hurt the wallet. , decided to do some work on the ute but its got flat battery so im waiting for it too charge enough to take it for a thrash, i mean nice gentle drive....

I spent the day pissing around with the Terrano at work. Fixed an oil leak on the Auto tranny cooler, only to discover the sump bung is weeping ever so slightly as is the filler bung for the Transfer box. Had to remove the bumper to access the tranny cooler hose clips. What a PITA!
PS. had a wee look whilst I was there on raising the winch bracketry, this requires a total rebuild tho.
Anyway back on track.
Now I know how to fix the sump bung, take it out and put in a new copper washer, should have done this 4 oil changes ago, but keep forgetting.
Now about the Transfer filler bung; has anyone got experience of getting this out as there is a X member in front of it making the insertion of a BF Lever type apparatus nigh impossible.
Why would this be weeping here? I have never had it off.
I will take it off soon as I want to replace the oil in this soon. I suspect the oil level is a little on the low side as I hear a whining noise in the Low range transfer gears around 20 - 30kph.

While you are thinking about ways to sort the electricity and these wind farms... do you realise that where they plan to put the first one is on an area recently reclaimed from farmers under tenure review, the Lamamoor Range. The DOC management plan does not provide for public vehicle access and of course they are pushing hard over all their areas to eliminate vehicles. Check the www.nzfwda.org.nz for the Oteake proposal in Otago!
However ... how will they build and service these wind generators? The operators will build a network of roads in an area that we've been told should be left to nature.

Well I finally got my motor back together
Primed up the injectors and fired it up and checked it for leaks ... Oops did not tighten the oil feed to the vacuum pump now I have a little puddle to clean up
Will take it for a run tomorrow and see how it goes.

more bits and pieces fitted to the POS vitara. Getting closer now. Have to sort out earth leads and battery terminals (and get a battery), fit the power steering pump, change the cam belt and tensioner, get a pod air filter for it (temporary) and do an oil change.

Then some gas, a couple of crossed fingers and it should start. Couple of weeks maybe (I know that has been said on here before and is usually a curse for a project) but you never know.

May even get some of this stuff done before the weekend is finished (cheers Liz)

You were right there Skid, it was bloody freezing up there... it was 0 degrees there was ice everywhere and the dew in the tents was enough to have a shower with! That was Friday night, Saturday was a warmer night

i done a fair bit of it in 2wd but it was pretty wet up the top on the track by the church. was rought and muddy. ill get some pics up later. was good i hant had my truck out for ages.got stuck once a real good stuck too lol. but its amazing ow far i cant get in 2wd with locker in the rear muc better than the LSD i had. and the with havn ADD and front hubs engaged havn the ability to get 4wd with the push of a button.

F'ing rain.

The toy is parked outside (the missus said her car was going in the garage not the POS) so all work is weather dependant. Everytime I get all the gear out and take the tarp and bonnet off it starts to spit with rain. If I push through the rain it hoses down. The wife has put some washing out and has asked that I leave my truck untiul it is dry as she thinks I am bad luck when I try to do stuff outside. I think she may be right.

Spent sat ripping off the front of the motor to replace the waterpump, why the %$#%@ did daihatsu designers decide that it would be a good idea to put the waterpump BEHIND the cambelt cover?? if they hadnt done that it would have taken about 15 minutes to replace the pump instead of the 3 hours to remove the grill, radiator, etc etc etc, one good thing came out of it though, I have had a increasingly bad oil leak over the last few weeks when i had the cam cover off I noticed that the front of the block was dripping oil, it looked like it was pouring out of the cam seal but daihatsu's dont normally have problems with oil leaks, on closer inspection i discovered that the bolts holding the tappet cover where loose ... very very loose as in i could lift the front of the cover by a few mm!! tightened them down ... cleaned all the oil out off the front, checked that the cam belt wasnt contaminated with it and chucked it all back together. dont have a pool of oil and coolent under the front to greet me every morning now


now to find out what that "click-clunk" is when i accelerate away from the lights
or the wonk wonk wonk it has at exactly 70kph not 69 not 71 but wonk wonk wonk at 70

The suzuki engineers did the same thing and the cambelt tensioner is mounted on the front of the pump as well.
