V6 surf, new project??

Post by hosehustler »

I want to know from blokes who have experience in these vehicles themslves,
I'm thinking next project could be one of these, solid axle front end, diffs, lockers, etc, could be a good conversion, given they seem already to have a power plant that I prefer.
so tell me what ARE the motors like :?: :?:

and all you know all's who don't have a valid opinion on v6 surf's: ie my mate said this, or I heard that, BLAH, BLAH,BLAH :pukel:
STAY OUT :!: :!:

Saw one today at G-GUYs workshop with solid beam and coils up front and a Holden V6 in there it sounded bloody good, seemed to be quite quick off the mark too..

It was a 1989 Hilux Surf base..

Talk to DJ or SUPRASURF they are the resident transplant gurus from what I have seen.

And I can certainly vouch that DJs work is good...

cheers, I have a solid axle, supra powered surf already :!:
what I would like to know is how the standard V6 toyota motors perform, as I would like to go to a 4 door vehicle eventually :)

The dimensions of the bodys on the later modle surfs and yours are identicle, as are the chassis to an extent, so could be a possibility.

If you used both the later modle chassis and body and did a SAS, you would have coils all round.

You use the Front diff and radious arms from a Prado, they are set up correctly, no swapping over of diff heads etc.

The guy i know who did this imported all the the steering links from OZ aftermarket. End result was a surf on coils 100mm+ higher than standard

Looked very impressive and performed to match!!!

The problem with the Prado links is the big bend in them... I guess Mr Toyota was thinking they would act as protection for everything else, but even when straightened a bit they are way kinky :) and stick down reducing trail clearance considerably.

Range Rover arms are straighter (Hell, I think rear Pajero arms are too) and would work just as well - and are cheaper to buy by far.

If you flip them like Mike did then you get nothing under the axle at all - perfect :)

And the Range Rover ones have that mushroom type bush at the chassis end as well don't they??
The ones that allow the radious arms to twist freely.
Or is that only in the rear??

Yeah, they have a pin, with two facing "mushroom" type bushes.

I've also head they can flex quite a bit better if the big nylock nut on the end of the pin is undone a turn or two before going offroad - although I don't know if anyone has tried that on here...

:D
Thanks guy's but i'm more interested in the motor :!: :!:
I'm definately wanting 4 coils on my next beastie but want a four door, I like petrol power, so am interested in one of these as a solid axle conversion (to coils) but want to know what they go like as they are a whole lot cheaper than the 3L TD,
The Thinking is not to have to do an engine swap :!:

Hey i have a four door surf with the 3.0l V6 motor in it. I dont do a lot of hard out four wheel driving just a few muddy tracks and bouldery river bed driving for hunting. On road there seems to be plenty of power with acceleration like a half decent car i guess!! It also seems to have reasonable low gear power for the decent up and downhill things i have attempted.
I read somewhere that the petrol motors are 105kw compared to the 3.Ol diesel which is 85 or 86kw i think but sure i will be corrected  But torque is lower than the diesel. The guys i have spoken to have said there will be bugger all loss of power with 33's on it and could do 35's if i wanted to no worries - dont know if thats hard fact or someones exageration!!
It is thirsty though a full tank will do me 400 - 430km
