i have been thinking abit about using a lever chain block as a recovery device
the theory is you have one of these on each end of the chain

and 2 lengths of chain on the vehicle to be recovered
then you wind the chain in when you get to the point where the chain won't go any further hook the other end of the chain to the other length of chain on the stuck vehicle flick the switch on the chain block and then start winching the other way the vehicle may slip back a little but when the slack is taken up it will start winching the vehicle again

do you think this would work
what issues can you guys think of

I reckon when your stuck you try Plan A then Plan B then Plan C then Plan D then Plan E then Plan F then Plan G then Plan H then Plan I then Plan J then Plan K then Plan L then Plan M then Plan N till the trucks finely out so yeah throw them in the back and one day they might just be what you need to get you out of trouble

Sounds very similar to what happens when a hi-lift jack and chains are used.

Only issues I've encountered in such systems is speed (slow but steady) and mud getting in the chain.

The latter point, the mud is not an issue for me as all the moving parts are going through the hi-lift and so long as I have my standing and winching position clear of mud it generally stays that way. Whereas, all the moving parts in the system you mention go through the hand-winch device. More important I guess you try to keep it all mud free.

As Sadam says, plan... plan... and more plans... more plans are good, especially if you already have the chain winch device in the workshop.

sounds a hell of alot better than tieing it to a tree and chopping the tree down...

Actually seen someone attempt this. The first part of the tree fall damn near ripped their hook-point off and out of the chassis before the truck moved about two metres, then the tree swing around in an arc and got hung up in another lot of trees. This meant they couldn't retrieve their rope for quite a while as they cut the other trees down to get the first tree flat and on it went... idea was great but geometry is everything...

hi there i have used the same sort of thing its slow but works allright i found that the mud was nt too bad to start with but it does get into the pully gears just need to make sure you wash it well when back home then plenty of oil. i could remove a side plate on my old pully block which allowed me to get good amounts of oil onto the gears inside

hi lifts aren't exactly quick either

it maybe a slow method but in most cases you only need to move afew metres to get traction,so its a reasonabley good idea
