hi i was wondering if the 410 transfer case just bolts straight in to a samurai or is there some mods that needed to be done to make it fit.thanks

No a 410 t/case will not bolt into a samurai . Drive flanges are different and the samurai does not use a t/case brake . Things can be swapped over but its been a wihle and think there is one flange that can't .
Saying that , that does not look like a 410 case , it looks like a samurai case . Going by the shape etc . Also it does not have the handbrake on the case , so even if it is a 410 case it has not got the correct flanges on it . Althou this may well suit you .

ah right i see i was just thinking of an easy alternative to lower the gearing so i can get up steep hills idleing as the 1.3 motor strugles up some hills.

I have a 410 case here that is fitted to a SJ413, I had to change brackets etc... (would consider selling it too) its one of the ones with the shift light that you can turn into the rockhopper by machineing the gears (got the extra gears you need to do that too out of a 413 one - just need machining)
But i remember someting about the bolt sizes changing upto the samurai's... like 12-14mm bolts? may be possible to redrill? i'm not sure... Another thought is it that if you want to goto rear disk brakes if you kept the handbrake on the transfer case may make it easier to do...

Check out the Q & A on the auction , it turns out to be just what you wanted .
It would give you about 12% reduction over all I believe , but you propably new that . What they call a babylobster in the states or aussie .

Chris, do you if when building the homemade rockhopper it is possible to do it in the samurai case (and flanges) with the cut and welded 410/samurai gears?
Cheers

Internally the 410 (post 1984 has 4wd light switch) and the 413 cases were the same (not sure if the samurai used the same case as the 413).
When I made a rocklobster from 410 and 413 transfer cases I reused the newer 413 case, complete with flanges and brake on the rear of the case. In hindsight I should've ditched the transfer case brake and done something like retro fit the later rear handbrake. Changing the shoes on the t case brake is an arse of a job at the best of times, so do yourself a favour and remove it from the equation when you can.
I ended up with an obscene low gear which was great for crawling over rocks and up banks but for general 4 wheeling it was just toooooooo low. I would just stick with a baby lobster if you are just after the ability to turn bigger wheels (12% gives you access to 30/31 inch tyres without clutch riding to get started, etc). Makes it better in mud as the low gearing just doesnt turn the wheels fast enough to clear.
If you are after a rock climber then go for it.

Hi
Yep should be able to drop al the gears into a samurai case , just not the chain driven coily one .
I have to disagree with Heath thou on two bits , while it is a pain to have hnadbrake drum it makes for a really easy rear disc conversoin as you do not have the cost of makeing up handbrake cables and you can use all suzuki stuff , not mitsi or honda calipers .
Also the low gear is great , the down side is reverse is lower . I think it gives a much better spread of gears , without the 4.16 swap 3rd low is like 1st high , so only makes 1,2 and 3 any good . With a 4.16 somewhere between 2nd and 3rd low is the same as the old 1st low . I have never needed to go above 5th low , even in speed sections .
But as Heath said the 410 box in a samurai is a great was to re gear for bigger tyres on the road .
Have three 4.16 cases in the shed going together when I get the time and no there are not for sale as they are all for other projects .

Did you get those bits of paper that were with the gears? [It was the writeup someone ?Heath? did a while back fron the nzook site]
That listed a place that used to do them in albany... They did a few of them a few years ago so used to know exactely how to do them... (not sure if they still would) Think it was precision engineering? I'll dig up the name again if you can't find it on that sheet...
Hitbiga - Let me know when your gonna get them done and I might put a 2nd set in at same time (may make it cheaper?)

The 3 sets that chris (rotazuk) just mentioned were done by Bernie at JK Racing in Bombay. PM me or Chris for prices.
I agree 4.16 transfer makes for perfect gearing on 31 inch tyres. Never had problem with reverse being too low, 1st low was ideal for slow controlled downhills, 2nd for hillclimbs, 3rd for mud, 4th (and sometimes 5th

) for high spped stuff if needed
