should of mentioned I am not a mechanic, have basic skills with hand tools and only usually do oil and filter changes, check fluids tension the belts etc and the surf is relatively new to me so I am not overly familiar with my vehicle.
So where exactly is the fuel pump and the screw you refer to? any pictures or links to pictures would be appreciated?

most likly TPS fault. also check butterfly in the intake, it may have stuck closed.

when you say butterfly in the intake do you meant the throttle butterfly itself? or is there another?

the butterfly in the intake is a bit werid. i don't know all about it but one part is connected to throttle cable and the other is to an acuator which is run by the egr system. it pays to make it so it stays open which is often done by blocking the hose off. i've only really played with 2lt so not 100% with 2lt-e.
however its still most likly TPS problem which should be easy enough to get another (comman accross a lot of toyotas). however setting it up is a bit tricky.

heaps of info at http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/forum/

Ok had a look at the throttle assembly and what i think is the butterfly system your talking about, The one with the little lever that runs off a vacuum that seems to be switched on when the engine id up to temp. seemed to be working fine, but she did the typical as soon as you start looking for the problem it disapears thing so not really any further ahead, had a good play with it though and found when cold that little butterfly can stall the engine but when warm just affects the idle a little, So am inclined to think its the TPS as it caused the engine to stall when warm, whats involved in setting one up?
