Hey Mate,

I have a '91 3 door 2.4 d/t auto surf for sale. I'll prob out it up on TradeMe this weekend. It's really mint in the body but has rust in both bottom door sills - have sourced a couple of doors and will pick them up on Saturday if they're as good as I'm told and same colour. It's got aftermarket adjustible suspension and a limited Slip diff. Getting a new WOF tomorrow and reg runs out in Oct I think? Also has towbar and nudgebar. I've had it for about 18 months or so and has been brilliant, no issues whatsoever apart from a leaky heater hose and a wornout balljoint (both replaced). Interior is mint, with newish Kenwood CD player. Not really had it offroad but 4wd and everything works perfectly. Motor goes great, starts everytime, doesn't use any oil - has 145k's (think it was 120 or so when I got it) Only other thing is the sunroof doesn't open electronically, apparently it's a common issue and they strip the gears? Opens and closes manually though, so no big issue.

Wanting $3500

Give me a call/text if you're keen. 021 1932554

1990 Hilux Surf - widebody
165k's on the clock, tidy body, no rust, towbar
2JZ-GE 1996 Supra engine fitted. Recond when installed 23,000km ago (had plans of adding large turbo for extra fun)
Haltech E6X engine management
VZN130 R151F 5spd box with fully manual transfer case
Manual Free wheel hubs, conventional front diff (not vacuum actuated)
4.1:1 LSD rear and matching 4.1:1 front
LVVTA Cert
Radiator recored when engine fitted.
Heavy duty custom clutch
Baleno GTX front seats - recaro look-a-like
15x8 alloys with 31x10.5 road/AT tyres
15x8 Desert Rats with near near new 31x10.5 GT Radial Adventuro MT's
Bosche external fuel pump
K & N filter
Twin 2 inch into 3 inch exhuast with 1 muffler - it sings a merry tune up the revrange :)
New front shocks
New rear springs
New heavy duty front pads
New front discs
after market guages - oil pressure & water temp
No heater or air conditioning.

this vehicle hauls ar*e, idles fine at all engine temps (lets see a link ecu do that). is pretty economical sitting at 2200rpm on the open road (9.5km/l, or 8km/l Towing boat), and goes off the speedo just after hooking into 4th gear. Anyone who has seen the sprintcars at baypark in the past 3 years knows what this vehicle is capable of. a little of the engine bay wiring could do with being tidied up (for show value). The engine has been built by me and no expense was spared when i installed the engine. Its been built to be USED, not to be nana'd

This surf stands out from all the 1UZFE powered ones, sounds different, goes better than most, better economy, power to burn, add a hair dryer and bigger injectors and HANG ON - front bumper already spaced fowards to make room for intercooler, with a suitably sized turbo, 10psi boost would see around 400HP at the flywheel. I estimate that its currently making around 250hp. (engine is 225 std)

Can fit a front skid plate if required, tow hooks available. $10000ono, negotiable if 2nd set of rims/tyres not required etc

4 cylinder deisel syndrome....

it happens on every 4 cylinder deisel that comes to mind thats fitted to cars, utes, vans and 4x4's

A modified exhaust (bigger) will get the heat further away from the head and a cooler? thermostat (opens sooner) it will last longer. Even the european performance diesels had a few issues when they first started getting performance out of them if you get a leak down test and the shop is happy then go for it.

All diesels will have some cracks in their head, (because of the way they heat and cool) the problem is when they start to open up or join together this is where a leakdown will help diagnose the health of the engine.

not really due to being 4 cylinder. local mechanic put it quiet well "its due to them being lightly built to squeeze every bit of economy, power and emissions out of them".

2LT crack badly due more to design faults. however they last fine with 3L heads on them.
a lot of them also crack due to emission systems especially when they go faulty, especially combined with poor maintenance. fouled up intakes due to oil via breather + soot from EGR means the intakes get restricted. as the ecu or mechanical pump only works on boost pressure not airflow they can poor in too much fuel. add worn injectors and excess egr its really easy to get head cracking temps. then add in that the motors are only lightly built, heat up too quick and cool down to fast, result is cracks.

also don't forget things like people not changing coolant or using straight water.

mods, regardless of make/model.....big bore exhaust certainly helps (especially with turbo diesel), a filtered catch can on the breather and getting rid of EGR.
