vitara a arms

Post by Heath »

Has anyone swapped the a-arms from side to side to move the wheels forwards?

Is this possible? I figured it would shift the wheels forward but I am concerned the axle angles would be too far forwards and the angle of the CV's would be too much at the outer end.

Would it be possible to remove the ball joint on the a-arm and move it forwards instead. I see the axles are angled slightly to the rear so an inch forward would actually straighten the axles and improve the CV angles and might be easier than the arm side to side swap. Just looking at ways of improving the approach angle, getting bigger wheeels under the guards and increasing the wheelbase a little. Of course all this will not be approved for an A class wagon but an E class(not sure on the regs for them) or C class maybe...

What if they dont know? How sneaky can you be?

I had seen a 'Hagen widening mod' where the tyres are moved out and forward by redrilling the rear bolt hole and swinging the arm on the front mount slightly, gives an inch forward and an inch out (also involves widening the axles and making them both bolt in short axles).

Of course now I have said this on a public forum no-one will be able to do it ... Bugger... next devious plan.

I guess an inch forwards and backwards (hagen mod up front and longer arms in the rear) although a nice improvement is illegal unless you run the anything goes class. Ah well in a few years may be.

if you swap the arms from side to side your springs will have nowhere to sit........
i already thought about that one and its a no-no.
de-ranged was going to alter my existing a-arms but cert man said no.
calmini or similar arms leave the ball joints further forwards but too expensive for me

Its better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

How hard would it be to move the ball joints further forwards our selves?

Make up a pattern, weld on over origional paint and no-one would know. Just kidding, of course we want these things safe but how hard would it really be...?

Might look for a set of arms off a wreck and have a look at their construction.
