Hello, I used to own a SWB 2L petrol pajero and are looking at buying another just unsure what the diesel engines are like. My main reasons I sold mine was it was sooooooooo slow gutless as hell and had rust where I didn't want it. Im looking at this one http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Cars/Mitsubishi/auction-34630276.htm but are unsure of that diesel engine any info great. I am a student and dont want big repair bills but a cheap offroader as I already own a leone.
Any info or thoughts great
Cheers
Dan

Hello,
I have a Gen 1 diesel (1989), and a gen 2 diesel (1991) at the moment, both are the 2.5 Turbo model with intercooler.
I have been told by many sources that the early mitsy diesel are a problem motor.
My 89 has 249000 on the clock and the 91 has 170000, both are running fine, no strange nosies or anything like that. One thing to bear in mind is the change in diesel fuel comming soon which may cause injector pump issues with these early motors (anything pre 95 may have problems)
The gen 2 has adequate grunt on the open road, the gen 1 definately leaves you wanting more for passing and hills, but as Paj94 says about the tourque, both motors do well when towing heavy loads (2 ton plus)
As the one on trademe is a 2.3 nonturbo, you may find it a bit too sluggish, as I find even the gen 1 is a bit slow winding up when the going is a bit sticky.
Hope this helps.

Not to thread jack, but whats the change in fuel spec's??
Thought they had done that age's ago, is this another one??
The 2.5's are again, as any early Turbo Diesel is where a Turbo has been tacked onto the side of an origionally NA designed motor, prone to cracking heads.
The Motor itself is largly based on the Petrol engine!!!
Its the 2.3's that are the real dogs!!!

"Compulsory in-service vehicle emission testing as part of the warrant of fitness is due to come into effect in the middle of 2006. Around the same time sulphur in diesel will be reduced down from the current 500 parts per million (ppm) to 50ppm."
from NZ herald 19 June 2005.
Had a leaflet with the lateset rego bill expalining it a bit more, as they reduce the aromatics and sulfur in the diesel, the older pumps will start having problems , they are talking about overhauling the seals etc every 6 years to prevent leaks. Currently the aromatics in the fuel cause the seals to swell slightly.
