I have used an old Jonsered 630 for many years and have had no trouble with it whatsoever. Lots of plastic on it so it is a very light machine if you have to lug it about.

There is three makes of chainsaws I would recommend to buy :!: :!: :!: , STIHL, STIHL and STIHL. If you are in the South ISLAND give me a call, my mate owns FOSTER'S OUTDOOR POWER EQUIPMENT and guess what ???? he has the STIHL agency.

HOW COME YOU CUT A TREE DOWN AND THEN CUT IT UP, :? :? :? :? :? ,

Now let me try to answer your question, If they are small Pines you don't need a big saw I would say 14"-------16" bar would be long enough and a motor size of 55cc---------65cc to be big enough, It's a bit like parts of your anatomy, it's not the size that counts It's how you use It,  . With Chainsaws you get what you pay for, with Stihl and Husky being at the top ( for NZ sales ), in saying that I have an old, old, Poulan 25 that I built out of a wreck and it has cut acres and acres of scrub and many a cord of Manuka and other fire wood. If you are buying second hand get the saw checked out, you can do it your self by removing the muffler and check inside the barrel looking for scuffing and or signs of seizing. Check the compression by pulling on the starter cord, it should go plonk, plonk, plonk with good quick resistance, run the saw and do a couple of cuts with it. Keep the maintenance up, clean the air filter, Mix the fuel yourself according to manufacturers specifications, keep the chain sharp and out of the dirt and the most important of all,

A CHAINSAW IS LIKE YOUR WIFE, DON'T LEND IT BECAUSE IT WILL COME BACK F---ED,

FITZY.

Its like everything.... you get what you pay for

Work out your buget and expctations and go from there. If you buy a Stihl or Husky you'll be paying good money and haveing a saw that will last you decades, I've had my Husky for 20 years and my Stihl for about 12 years and there both still going strong.

Try and not buy a saw thats too small for what you want to do or you'll just end up cooking the thing

I have a brand new 45cc husky with a 16 and an 18 inch inch bar, good light saw for general use.
I also have a 77cc Jonsered with a 24 inch bar for felling larger trees and large firewood logs.
Yeah don't buy something smaller than you really need just to save a few dollars.

The bar size depends on what size power head you've got and what you want to cut?

My 83cc husky runs a 24" bar nicely and my 140cc Stihl runs a 42" bar

i got a 455 rancher husky, i bought new a couple of years ago, runs a 18" bar and is a reasonable size for fire wood, according to the specs it will run a 20" bar, 55 ccs, got all the x torque and other shite, but one thing it can empty the tank pretty damned quick, but nice to use, reasonable power and very smooth to hang onto, what ever you get make sure it has the vibration isolation gear on it,

i run a few saws but my two favorites are my stihl ms650 and my 023 .the 023 has a 14 inch bar and it rocks ,it can take a bigger one but the 14 works really well and it is light .my ms650 cuts like a demon but you know it at the end of the day (takes quite a few tuis to get the ache out of my back)i would highly reccommed the stihl 023 or 025 ( i also run huskys and echos )thats my two cents worth :)

Both Stihl & Husky are good saws, I used Stihls many years ago clearfell logging in the central north island, and they were awesome saws. I had one (av051), for a fire wood saws for a long time, but now own a husky XP398 (98cc). Dont buy anything to small for the task as you not only wear the saws out but you also make it hard on yourself :D
