My brother-in-law has a 96 Toyota Cavalier that died on a trip to Taupo.
It spent 2 weeks at an auto-sparkie who were asked not to spend too much money on it.
They didn't ... They tested the coil pack and a bunch of other stuff and decided that the most likely problem is the coil pack which can't tested in place.
They were quoted $600 plus for a replacement that may or may-not fix the problem so they did not go ahead.
The end result is that I have fetched it home on a trailer and we are going to try and get it going.

What a really DUMB place to put the coil pack ...







So my first question is if I add conventional leads to the coil pack will it work ??
My thought is if we spend the money on a new Pac we then mount it out of heat.

Ideas on testing and possible replacements please.

if you add leads to it it will reduce the spark intensity due to the resistance of the leads.. its also a common problem in nissan rb series engines which every1 is fixing by wiring in a vn commodore coil park and running 9mm leads off this... best option is to replace the coil pack. im sure you can get a replacement from bnt or something like that

The biggest problem with a straight replacement is that they keep getting cooked ... this is the third ...

Is info on the nissan mod on the net ??

check trade me dude thers a guy who sells replacement coil set ups for the rb nissans on there

i make replacement setups for all my mates cars in np its a stright for excersise for some one with a bit of electrical knowledge and being a sparky made it easy lol some 1 has done a bit of a right up here http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums ... sted+spark

try that i havnt done a toyota before but it wont be much different

the only thing toyota about that car are the badges on it. its american made sh1t thru and thru. So many people buy those t hings expecting to get toyota relibility from them, they couldn't be further from the truth, they are crappers the coil packs die. they are only worth $200+gst 2nd hand these days by the way. window regulators pack up, $200-250 per door.

oh yes. im sure toyota always regretted their name on these cars, the window regs do shit themselves, usually just the motor thankfully as you can do these in place, the regs are RIVETED in with a queer type rivet.
