80 series fuel light and consumption

for all those 80 owners out there, I'm interested to hear if any of you have calculated your fuel consumption and what it is.

I did mine over 4-5 fills and came up with an average of 13.50 l/100km mainly around town.

has anyone done any sums like this and what are yours

also as a little side note, I've always thought that when the fuel light came on solid (not flickering), that I'd be good for at least 50kms, but have always filled it up after 20-30kms, until this morning when after about 40kms the bloody thing ran out of gas, which caused me to do a curly on the hutt motorway this morning

I get 750kms till the fuel light comes on and from there I fill an average of 75litres - 10kms/L or so.

I've read that 80 series have a 95 litre tank and I drove a few days with the fuel light on and that fill I put 85litres in, that's the biggest I've ever had. My gauge doesn't work so I have to rely on my trip meter and fuel light to make sure I don't run out.

Interesting, i don't feel so bad!!!!!!

I have been keeping tabs on my consumption during my trip down south.

Best yet has been 7.5K's per L from hamilton to wellington driving like a nanna.

Worst has been 5.8k's per L on a windy hilly road around lake Whakatipu to the dart river and back to Queens town.

Thats on new injectors, a K&N and 3" zorst, 33's and a full load of gear.

Skid, your getting about 7.4k's per L.

and here I was thinking I need to do injectors etc etc etc to make it more economical on fuel

Yeah I could've gone for an Auto VX especially with auckland traffic but when I found this manual one on trademe I had to have it.

Only LSD rear and centre diff lock but I can get locking diffs for it down the line if I want to get serious.

At the moment it's only used for a daily driver and the occasional nissan retrieval.

We did over 4000K's in the last 10 days around the sth Island, fuel consumption averaged 6.8k/L

What kills the consumption figure is the prolonged foot to the floor up hills and during over taking. More power would = Less time spent with the loud pedal on the floor

Ben seems to be getting in the 8k/L range in his 24valve manual, and hes been busy playing with the fuel and boost, i have left mine standard, or rather as the work shop set it up after having the injectors done, and i still use way more fuel and its like driving with the handbrake on compared to Ben's  .

Funny thing about it is no matter what you do, mine won't over fuel (doesn't blow smoke). We got called out on Sunday night on a rescue mission, long story short, even at full rev's throwing mud in all directions in 3rd Low with another vehicle in tow, it was smokeless.

Based on that i'm going to increase the fuel, increase the boost slightly and make sure the Boost Compensator diaphram is working, as i suspect it isn't doing anything, leading it to leen out as the rev's increase.

Believe it or not, i wouldn't be suprised if i gain some better economy out of it despite increasing the fuel rate. At the moment it tends to get driven with my foot right up it all the time :D .

Checked the timing?
How does yours and his compare for idle noise? A more advanced injection timing will be louder and give more of the dak-dak-dak noise.

Yep, since I had the work done it has a more pronounced diesel knock, so presume they have set the injectors up to a reasonably high pressure and advanced the timing to suit.

Pretty sure it just needs more fuel

There are some turkeys on ih8mud claiming 30mpg (10-11km/h) when driven at a steady 110km/h.
When questioned further they start insulting your driving.

Have almost finished the auto to manual gearbox conversion. Looking forward to the fuel saving.

The 80 as it was would get around 550km/80 litres of fuel. Thats with 4.1's and 35 inch tyres.
Thats almost 7km/litre. Would love to see that climb to 8 or 9.

Anybody know how to wire up the reverse lights using the existing auto wiring without having to pluck wires out of the lume.

Cheers
