1992 Escudo diff preload settings please??

Post by Weemsy »

im after the correct preload setting for the front and rear diffs in a 92 escudo.
they are 5.12.
i wish i hadnt pulled them apart cuz they were all fine inside, but if i hadnt they would have spat bits out no doubt.
cant seem to get a specific setting off anyone.
cheers

on all of mine i have just guessed and they have never failed cause of what i did,i put them together with a fraction of play and held my tongue right, so i am pretty much useless to you, need to look at a hayes or gregorys type manual,

yeah, normally the tongue out method works for me but i thought i would ask as these didnt seem to have play in them, thats why i asked about preload.
haynes and whatever the other manual is that i have doesnt say about stripping axles, just removing them and giving them to someone who knows what they are doing

Try outerlimits suzuki section

http://carl.outerlimits4x4.com/forum7.p ... 20b944de19

Look in the bible stuff first or you will get flamed (they seem to like doing that) rather than just tell you where to look.

Had a quick look in the vitara bible and couldnt find anything. I'll post for you if you like.

Hi Weemsy, I'll duck across to the workshop later today and go through the factory service manuals, see what I can find.

Cheers

Weemsy, sorry I had no joy today. I only had a couple of minutes over there and couldn't find anything straight away.

If you're still looking next week I'll have another crack and see if I can get some assistance from the senior technicians, who are always happy to help me 'cause they know how useless I am!

cheers leigh,
dont go out of your way cuz it wont be going in for a few weeks yet anyway, so i will build it up when i get the settings.
ive tried that website UBZ sent me, but i cant get the haynes websites to work or find the setting anywhere else?
the torque settings for the 4 bolts i found (i think thats what you gave me HEATH) but no preload settings......
i will build it up how i would normally do but i dont know whether it is supposed to be preloaded or have a bit of float in the bearing (according to an american guy on another forum)???

do you mean how much slap sorta thing there is in between the crown and pinion? cause the correct setting for that (well what we set up our trials truck diffs at) is so you can just hear and feel a litle click when you twist the pinion, like shit all of a mm gap sorta thing

hope that helps :D

hi cool bananas.
nah, the pinion backlash isnt the problem,

its the tension on the diff assembly bearings im after, the round plates with the holes in with the lock tab that loads the (spool?) bearings.

it might not be too important and they might just be set with the old 'tweak-it-up-and-back-off-quarter-turn' method??
i dont want the bearings whining so i thought i would find out what everyone else does??
i got told they are preloaded A LOT but it seemed a bit over the top so i thought i would ask the people who actually work on these things (you guys :D ) as the settings ive been given seems B.S.

cheers

Hi Weemsy

I've just photocopied the whole diff' section of the Suzuki factory service manual (23 pages) so should be able to find just about any info you want.

Side gear thrust play: 0.005 - 0.014 in. (0.12 - 0.37 mm)
Pinion bearing preload: 9.0 - 17.0 kg-cm (7.8 - 14.7 lb-in)
Bevel gear backlash: 0.005 - 0.007 in (0.13 - 0.18 mm)
Tightening torque for diff' carrier bolts: 13.5 - 20 lb-ft (18 - 28 Nm)

Hope this helps. Any other info you need, give me a call.

Cheers
