38's on a 13bt 70 series cruiser?

Any body have any idea of how big you can go for tires on a 70 series SWB cruiser? What lifts would it need etc, I haven't had time to pick up my new ride yet, (perhaps this weekend depending on work) but I am already looking at tires and suspension mods so any advice/help will be appreciated cheers. Cruiser is basically stock suspension on 33's.

anything can be done with enough mods, a local mate is probably going to go with 40's

Sweet, what about Horse Power, will it have enough grunt to drive 38's, or will I need to change diff ratios or put crawler gears in transfer case? I want to keep it road legal too.

do a spring over and cut the guards you want to keep it low as possable
my surf has a shit lod of mods but its not high at all cause I cut out the guards as much as I could and that would be able to flex up on 40's (runs on 37's)
but as for power throw in a set of new 4.88 r and p

what are you running? a 13bt with 4.1 diffs? mates rig is still in the build so can't comment on power yet but my guess is you may want to change ratios or gearing..
i guess it depends what your wanting it for, they certainly seem to go fine standard engine and gearing on 36's so maybe 38's or even 40's will be fine, only one way to find out.

you can get 38s to fit if you want. Wee bit of suspension modification, wee bit of a body lift, wee bit of trimming here and there and a set of 5.29 ring and pinions in your diffs
sweet as

slightly off topic but who makes 38's? are they a swamper or something, usually people go with 37 wranglers around that size and then up to the big bastards 39.5's/40's etc.. i must be out of the loop i used to think (still do) that m,y 36 simex's are huge.
What sort of mods do ya have on your swb cruiser?

Sweet thanks for your comments, I havn't picked it up yet but its a wellington truck, owned by an older gentlemen and he has told me it is stock, and it looks it. I have been looking round on trade me etc and found that I can get a set of 38's or 37's for basically the same price as 35's so want to do my homework first. I am unsure of diff ratios, how do I tell? I'm thinking about going SOA and a body lift, but as I say am doing my home work first. I have paid good money for this truck and want to make sure I enhance it not wreck it. I will chuck up a photo as soon as I have read and understood how......

My guess would be that if you want to run 37s then a SOA is the best way to acheive it. I'm 99% sure that you could flex up without touching on that size. You'd want to fit 4.88 R+P minimum maybe 5.29 would have to check. But if your gonna do that then you might as well fit a 80 series rear diff in, convert it to coil springs with disc brakes............................

Shit it took me ages to remember where I saw this, Callum007 had 37" creepies on his SOA Cruiser. I think he had to run a double cardin driveshaft and from memory the truck liked to park on its side quite a bit

But feels soo much more stable with wide feet. The rear end foto shows how level it is at point just before wheel lift. Maybe look for longer airbags now..

I got 36 swampers on my SOA cruiser and on the hills to the coast it was flyin up them in 5th gear,im runnin 10psi my mate is puttin 15 thru his.serious motor mate i love it ,Oh i have steel beadlock rims to real heavy,no power probs what so ever, but on my last trip i did blow cv,snapped leaf spring and sheared all 4 steering bolts on the knucle

the pic in my avatar is it with stock flat springs (Bent) and no body lift if you go high you'd probly want some 60 series cruiser axels to widen her up a bit

Did you buy that gold one on trademe

it looked a tidy unit
im running 4:1 ratio diffs have had a disk rear conversion.my thing has been on its side to,with the SOA it sits up a bit high and the leafs push up rather than flex up,ive switched to full link with long travel coilovers to really flex up,only prob is i gota find sumwhere to put the batterys and air box as they mount right up and in and up to the windows in the rear
but SOA with leafs is far cheaper and still great fun

yea but it was not perfect condition before the trip, once you have it maintained and in good nick it will go all day every day like that. Was a bit unluck that trip but made for good fun fixing it on the run..

Yeah thats the one, its bloody tidy verging on mint even, I am trying to upload a photo but cant find the photo album bit?? One thing I was thinking about was whether I could bolt all my running gear and cab to a Bundera or Prado coil chassis, or would it be easier to modify the original chassis to coils? I am glad I asked about it as it seems there are a lot of options!

My mates got a gold one like that.I really like the 70swb and almost bought that gold one you have.
It all depends how far you want to go.they chew cv's so if you did an SOA with longfields cv's,axel's and hub rings's you will then have great clearance,be able to fit big tyres and not wory about popin cv's so much as the big tyres and standard cv's dont go well when up lift a wheel
I bought my 70 series back after 6 months just because i really like everything about them.even with 36 swampers its very comfterble on the open road and your one has the pto winch and bar work right around
Id drive it for a month or 2 then re-evaluate what you want to do and change
Rear disc breaks make a good upgrade tho

Hi, I have a mid wheel base BJ74 running a 13bt through an auto on 35's find it a little down on power trying to maintain momentum on big hill climbs and or spin the wheels to clear them. the fit fine with a 80mm susp lift and a 2 inch body lift, have lowered my bump stops to stob them rubbing under full twist, also bear in mind that over 33 you will need to cert and will more than likely have to adjust steering stops to prevent rubbing on your steeing arms and springs at full lock. I agree with the above about taking it for a few runs first and see where it falls short then make your mod list. cheers and welcome to the fold

I ink basically any tire mods will need cert. I'm running 33s on mt MWB BJ74 with 13BT. I get a little rub with them with std setup. Was told last WOF that it should be certed, any thing over I think 5% (correct me) needs cert, he said even 31s on the cruiser technically need cert. He wasn't worried but did say that the wof guys all got letters a while ago noting them to enforce the tyres thing. My wof guy is more interested in safety than technicalities of the law so was ok about it but said he should tell me it needs cert and that if they start enforcing it on the road the wof guys will have to buck up. Apparently if they pull you up for an uncerted vehicle they can track it back to the wof guy and are looking at penalizing him, it will be hard to enforce as it is unknown when mods were done, esp with tyres.
Regardless the 13BT is a nice engine. Who can comment on the difference in performance between 13bt and 3b?
Mate of mine has a nicely modded but ever breaking MU (for his type of use), so is also looking at going a bit heavier built truck.

Great - will be keen to hear - I drove a 3b awhile before buying my 13bt and felt it was a slug (good grunt but not so much go) but it was a while before driving each.
Just the other day I left my sister's place out Loburn and took a back way home, at the same time my bro-in-law and father followed me out the drive and took off in their 2.2 Honda Accord and 1.8 Carib the other way, apparently they were blatting along at up to 145kph and they were surprised to see me pulling up to an intersection where our two roads met to wait for them to go past. Proves that the route I chose was shorter (albeit part shingle) but I was able to cruise along at 130 on my speedo on the sealed part. Later I followed my father from an intersection and he was flat to the floor as was I, and was actually only dropping away from him slowly up to about 90kph. I do like the turbo!

even 37s are starting to be annoying on the road if you drive it much, its hard on breaks, suspension bushes etcm, there sooooo heavy if there like 13.5 or 14.5 wide with steel rims, and im not too sure about this one cause i dont know much about what motor your running but mostly unless you can light the wheels up like a v8 can then it wont be to good, but try it

proove me wrong, it will look mean as

I have swapped up from a 3b to a 13bt truck and the difference is quite a bit, even though my 13bt is through a hp killing auto trans I still have a heap more grunt. I would advise your mate to get a 13bt if he can cause the extra puff on hill climbs is great. when I put 33's on my 3b it was okay but I would not have wanted to go bigger as it would have struggled to spin them enough to get them to clear.

Appreciate your input (even though it not my thread) what you say is exactly what I got the idea from driving the 3b. The 13BTs seem to not suffer from the heating issues like the 2.4s and 3.0s
