hi guys

ive got a 95 pr50 terrano, 2.7td. yesterday after towing my boat over the hill from akaroa the truck was running slightly above half on the tempurature gauge. not to bad i thought after slugging it up the hill. but after driving on the flat road back to chch for about 10 - 15k the truck starts to over heat. i pull over and try to get temp down but continues to climb untill just above h.

i know your not suppossed to turn the truck off but i had to. i put a towel over the radiator cap and took it off slowly. after letting out shit loads of steam, its madea bigg bubling sound and stopped. went back and looked at the temperature gauge and had cooled right back down to half. so i started it up again.

looks like the truck had spit its water out and got an air lock in it? i had to put inaround 2.5 litres of water.

so what is it guys? blocked radiator? dodgy radiator cap or thermostat? ive checked it this morning while running and theres no bubbling so i dont think ive blown the head ( fingers crossed).

My terrano overheated twice on the akaroa hill, so I replaced the radiator, because the fins had turned into tissue paper. During the replacement I noticed the fan clutch/viscous coupling for the fan was very easy to spin. To fix the fan problem I had to replace the whole waterpump assy as the fan clutch is integral & I had a spare anyway. The silicon fluid leaks out and can be refilled, apparently you get tubes at toyota. Havent had any overheating problems since, the acid test was towing a boat up porters pass, with the truck full of people, the gauge moved about a neddle width extra.
I'd say your problem could as simple as a dodgy radiator cap or thermostat. And also check your fan clutch, if it spins easy and keeps spinning, its stuffed, if it stops within about 1 rev its ok.
Really unusual to be warm on a hill & hot on the flat. Did it spit the lost water out of the overflow? If it didn't, check your oil for milkyness (water in oil means internal leakage) or for water leaks down the side of your block from the head gasket.

Those fans on Terranos are renound for going out. Mine on the V6 terrano dod the same.

Also check the fliter in the injector pump if its blocked with gunk it may be causeing it to run lean thus causeing high temps in your motor

thanks for that, i dont think its running lean. i can only get around 450kms to a tank of deisel. is that normal?

i cant rember what i was getting now but i rember getting from inglewood to te kuiti on $20.oo in mine
