If we want four wheeling recognised then we need to have it included in the draft CMS.

If you missed the July 31 Deadline for comment to DOC, they have extended until the end of August.
DOC discovered that they did not get much interest from several 'traditional' user groups like trampers... so they have given more time and written to them asking for comment.
This provides time for you to say something too about what you'd like to see DOC doing in the Canterbury conservancy.

It is very worthwhile to get involved.
I got nearly 70 signatures and put a submission in for the West Coast CMS and the DOC were very reasonable. Half a dozen of us had a meeting with Doc and they were very reasonable and listened to what we had to say. I came away feeling positive.
If you put a submission in you need to be specific and Quote the CMS document.
I haven't read the Canterbury CMS but if anyone wants advice on the process I'm only to happy to help. send me a PM

There's been an update provided by DOC Canterbury that can be found at www.nzfwda.org.nz
They comment that they've had 58 submissions to the CMS development. A rather pitiful response really considering the number of people who may want to use DOC land in the future.

I agree with you Peter . If it was an off topic topic subject talking a lot of dribble everyone would be involved .

DOC have a CMS 4x4 workshop planned www.nzfwda.org.nz and have provided some briefing notes. Among them is a reference to braided rivers and that they're not emphasising those in their workshop. However if one reads their draft words on braided rivers, it may be that more needs to be done.

Canterbury CMS update
DOC Canterbury have provided an update on their CMS progress....
* Two additional 'consultative draft places' (2.10 Canterbury Limestone and 2.12 New Areas) were added to the web page in October, for public comment.
* Most chapters, including the 'place' sections, will be completed in draft form by end-December. Maps and the inventory of conservation lands will be completed in draft form by February.
* The whole CMS will be compiled in draft form by mid-February
* Public participation is ongoing throughout the CMS drafting, through discussions with interest groups and the receipt of public comments on the 'consultative draft places' that are on the DOC web site.
* Ongoing workshops are being held with the Canterbury Aoraki Conservation Board as draft chapters/places are prepared.
* Options for how the CMS may deal with the recent St James conservation area acquisition, it's future land status and public use management, are being considered.
* I am considering displaying the CMS contents page on the DOC web in early 2009, with the offer to provide chapters/places on request, for informal public comment as for the current information on the web page.

Also remember, your comments received at this draft-CMS preparation stage are not formal submissions and no hearings on them will be held, although I may well contact you to discuss your comments. The formal submission and hearings process will begin when the draft CMS is publicly notified, approximately April 2009.
