me thinks they are shagged

the right hand side is getting qite hot to toch and the left hand side is stone cold im guessing this isnt normal?

good excuse to by manuel hubs eh?

you havent recently done your brakes?? if they are rubbing slightly they will generate some heat through to the hub, but yeah get manual ones any way, then you know your in 4x4

For Superwinch Free Wheeling Hubs what sort of price are they also do they fit straight in ie no need for spacer??

Everthing you need to fit them comes in the box. You will not have any problems with superwinch hubs.

P.S. These are not mine. I am just a trademe junkie.

yeah they seem to "come on" while drivin down tha road so i stop and they clunk out and im away again

Just be aware that the Superwinch and all other aftermarket freewheel hubs are ALOT weaker than factory. The factory auto/manuals can be converted to manual witha small mod.
I use whatever I can get cheap, ie at present I have a Superwinch and a AVM hub, as I use them as fuses. Much quicker to replace hub than CV, and I go through a few hubs!!

The other thing is if you have the auto/manuals then they can be fixed. A lot of the problems with them are due to them being greased or dirty. They should be oiled with engine oil only otherwise they will do funny things like engage when in 2wd.

so if i take them off spray them with degreaser then oil them they should work again ok?
or am i better off replacing them?

still seems funny that 1 hub is stone cold and the other is very hot to touch

ive only ever had probs with my auto hubs wen they got mud buildup so i clean them and away i go again but wen serious offroading always lock them in saves wear and tear on them

how do i "lock" the auto hubs?

21 mm hex head in middle of hubs ,,, turn til they lock , then wen ya finnished with 4x4 turn them oposite way to auto the same as usual to release

There are 3 (maybe 4) different factory hubs that came out on the GQ, all are generally accepted to be stronger than many after market brands, some are stronger than others. Check out the hubs the Aussies use in competition. Like Darin says hubs are useful as an easily replaceable fuse. Some of the winch challenge guys have decided to stop replacing hubs (and loosing the $ that cost) and have toughened the CVs and axles and now run the stronger factory hubs. No breakages to date even with front lockers in regular use.

well not a good story now

took my auto hubs off and jacked the truck up to find the wheel bearing farking loose.
so either i didnt it up correctly or what im not sure.
and now the ring that goes over tha splines is abit shagged will get a pic up soon just wanting to know if i get manuel hubs will i need this or not? if i do then does anyone have anything lying around the place?

Re the Chrome Molley CVs and Axels,Weve been running them for awhile now in our comp truck theyve now done a couple of winch challenges and a few grade 5+ runs and were very happy with them i can almost guarantee if we had been using any other set up we would of broken at least one or two CVs ,I priced getting them direct from Cal offroad in Aussie but Warren at 4wdbits beat their price by several $100 and i didnt have to wait 2 weeks for shipping ...Steve

My drivers side had a bit of a waa last week so pulled it off on Sunday and degreased then oiled it like suggested. Seems to be going all good in auto mode now. Cheers for the tip. Just need to find some more time during good weather to do the passenger side now.

Also are the hubs numbered for left and right?

safari peter all the brass bits belong to the autos , if you fit manuals lose those bits but not the circlip, it moves to the outer grove on ya axle

yeah after this thread i fitted the manuel hubs and havent looked back

i do miss the auto ones on my safari. i liked watching the other club guys get out in the rain and engage their hubs hahahaha but you just cant rely on the autos. it was the first mod i did to mine. put them manual ones on.

haha yeah 1st time i had them on i was at work an went to cross the drain and got stuck because of no auto hubs
