got one in my 87 d-cab
didnt do it myself so cant give you costs but eng will go in easy with some mods to the engine mounts, transmissions the hard part will have to get gear box adaptor.
goes bloody well tho lots of low down power spins up my 33s no probs.

hi

rough rule of thumb i work by is you won't get much change out of about 5-7k if you pay some one to do it, the motor itself is the cheap bit, its all the other little extras that bite, fuel lines, radiator, hoses, mounts, drive shaft mods, etc etc, as for motor i have a ecotec V6 series 2 and would recommend you stay away from the non ecotec, it may cost a bit more for the donkey but the performance is worth it, you will however run into security code issues with the later motors, VS onwards, you can get around this by using a modded chip on the PCM, or making a black box to give the required codes.

personally i would go v6 over v8 anyday, smaller lighter and similar power, and a whole lot easier to cool.

Cheers

gimmemud has a VN (i think) in his 1985 surf, i have driven it a few times, goes great! sits at 100km fine, even towing a zuk on a 3m trailer.

One more plus for the holden is it fits the engine bay very well and you still have a lot of room. I have seen the 2jz conversions and the v6 holden and for offroading the holden seems to be the better torque and power the straight 6 has the better revs but is a tight fit.

cool sounds like what i need and commodore engines are cheap eh....my diesel still ok but may keep eye out for conversion parts now and get ready for the change...also the commodore engine must be more grunty than 2.8 turbo diesel would that be correct

Yes the commodore (from the ones I have driven) transform the hilux into more of a road vehicle and you dont have to concentrate or work on the road on hills or when towing.

You should also look at the oil pickup on the engine some have had issues with the std pickup on angles starving the engine of oil. Only really big angles and longer periods like winching it is an issue.

The difference a more modern petrol makes no matter what it is is huge even the old 5m is a huge change I just dont have the money for everything at once.
