i am looking a buying a 89 2.4 diesel surf for quite cheep but the engine isnt that gr8. it smokes alot of whiteish blue smoke, uses alot of oil. there is no water in the oil (and its not using any water) and the owner said he knew it wasnt a turbo problem. compression is down in al cylinders but they are all quite even. apart from the smoke it goes very well, took it for a drive and it didnt really seem to be down on power. any ideas whats wrong with it? valves?? also would it be worth fixing or replacing?? if i do get it i will have about $1000 to spend on fixing it.

Don't touch it would be my personal opinion. Having said that even a good looking one can crap out at any time...

But, if its down on compression and smoking then its worn out... buy it at your own peril, or if you fully plan to repower or recondition it (recond a 2.4TD will cost around $2500 or more I would think)
