i have a bighorn with a poked 2.8 tdi, lots of blow by and no compresion ........
i only payed 2.7k for it, is it worth a new motor?
your thoughs.
repower advice?
Re: repower advice?
How do you rate your mechanical ability and workshop facilities?
They're a sleeved motor and shouldn't be difficult to replace the piston/rings/liners/bearings/seals.
But it also shouldn't be too hard to find a donor engine from a similar truck that's crashed or rusted out.

OK with people able to do the work (and you supply beer and Pizza) the costs would be about the same either way. The difference is you know what you have and if you do the recon you wont have any year plug loom changes to worry about and know the new bits are in and it is all good, swap an unknown motor in and you could always have a big ? over it, how many KM how healthy.
If you didn't have the tools, knowledge or time a swap would be the option going to a more powerful engine sometimes can be almost as much work as a swap if they changed things between years and you need to swap things around. (the Toyota 2LT is like thei Gen 1, Gen 2 and I think there is a Gen 3 now are only the same in name very different engines blocks pumps etc)
I did a light rebuild rings headgasket etc and then thought bugger it I will have a look at the bearings etc for piece of mind, it was all good! so I am happy that there is nothing major (still got Piston slap but toyota said nah just rings in a couple of hundred thousand more KM do the pistons and a rebore (500,000km)
