Not really sure where to put eletrical questions, probably a forum for it I've missed but anyway,

12v winch on a 24v (Safari) system.

Can it be done easily and cheaply?

Cheers, Taz.

Hey Taz,
the guy you bought your tyres from, Bob has just done this. He needed to replace a few bits but it goes fine. Call him, if you don't have the number let me know.

do you mean hook it up to the 12v battery??

no, he means running 24v through it for more speed I presume.

If you mean still running it on 12v then you need to run it off the low battery (the one that is earthed) and add a charge equaliser to keep the charge of the two batteries even otherwise you will kill your batteries as the one that the winch runs off will end up flat and over loading the other. if you mean running a 12v motor off 24v it depends on the way the motor is built, you would need to swap the control / solinoid box to 24v a 12v unit usually just draws twice the amps than a 24 volt so motor will run twice as fast on 24v but it may cook it so you would need to check with motor manufacturer or get a motor rewinder to look at it to check if it will run on vairiable voltage.

it wont draw twice the amps as on 12v as the va rating of a motor never changes so the wattage is always the same.

power=volts x amps so the more volts the less amount of current the motor will draw.

the motor should be able to handle the 24v but the control circuit wont therefor you will need to change out all relays etc and install 24v ones which will be rather expesive and would probly outweigh the cost of a 24v winch

Thanks for the comments guys. Were the answers I was looking for. Like h8ruba said a 24v is the way to go it seems. To much hassle without any advatages with to go the backwards way about it.

one of the guys in our club ran his chinese 12v winch on 24v, it was scary fast and sounded like it would explode from over reving but hung togeather for 3 winch chalenges, first thing to go was one of the solenoids to earth, we put the whole solenoid pack in a plastic bag to stop from earthing and carried on for another whole chalenge.
so in a word, yes, but no

I've got a mint Aisin 24V winch if you want it!!!!!

Brought it for my 80 series with a plan to run it from the 12v/24v system, but found a 12v one istead, so the 24V winch is looking for a good home.

Its the 12000 lb Aisin factory fitted to some cruisers.

Its mint, complete with all wireing and remote, and cheaper than a new crappy 12000lb 24V Chinese Runva

Very tempting but I'm looking to buy a new 4wd with the money I saved up for springs and a winch for the Safari. Figure its cheaper to buy something thats had a few mods done to it and I'm not worried about damaging instead of pouring money into the Safari.
Thanks for letting me know though. How much would you be looking to get for it so anyone else that might be interested knows.
