Surf Gearboxes and Transfers

Hi all,
I have an '89 Surf SSR LTD 2.4D, Manual with ADD. I would like to know if it's possible to swap transfer cases with a non-ADD type without having to replace the box. If so, what model transfer is required. Trans code is R150F and I think it has a VF1A transfer box at the moment. Cheers

Would a Hilux Transfer not be the same, (chain driven). I'm sure that some of these Surfs did come without the ADD and they had a G58 Box that is also used in the Hilux.

G58? The early Hiluxes had a G52 (4 or 5 speed) with a gear driven T/C, and the Surfs had a W56 with the same T/C. When they went to that R-series box they also changed to a chain drive T/C and I am pretty sure the mounting and dimensions are different.

Happy to be proven wrong on this, as the R-series gearboxes are supposed to be stronger - but the chain drive T/C's are supposed to be weaker.

A friend of mine has a '92 D/C Hilux IFS. His trans code is G58 (witch was used in the Surf also) Without pulling them off, does any body know if the T/F's are interchangeable. Mine is the generation 2 Surf

You can't swap the G/W series Xfer onto an R series box.
The G/W series is normally a 21 spline unit the R series will be 23 spline, also the bolt pattern is different ??

The R series is a strong box and the transfer is almost unbreakable, the only reason you'd want to change is to redo the transfer gearing or get away from the electric engage.

The reason behind the chain is to make the xfer quiet for the constant 4wd trucks. The yanks don't like the chain because you can't seperate the reduction from the 4wd/2wd split and you also can't alter the xfer internal gearing.

Ok, that's my plan out the window! So what's the best way to get rid of this ADD electric/vacuum crap!
I'm guessing that I'll need to swap to a Hilux box/trans. Are the bellhousing patterns the same on 2LT &3L's? Is this even an option?
Cheers, Dave
