Went out to the garage and found the steering box had dumped all its oil out of the sector shaft. No doubts there, OK, need new seals somewhere in there I thought but in the meantime I've re-filled the box and pump with new oil, taken it for a drive, and parked up again. On the drive, the oil level remained full. After the drive I checked the level, it was OK. I placed a bucket under the box, and went out the last two mornings now and no more oil leak...

What happened to the leak? Was my oil worn out?
Some points:
* Box is installed in an early model 110 repowered by a LD28 Nissan
* Oil used is Prestone with included seal conditioner - viscosity rate not given.
* Gemmer power steering box heritage unknown as it was given to me when I did the engine transplant Dec last year. Orinally fitted to later model 110 Land Rovers pre Defender I think.
* It had a minor leak when first oiled up on installation Dec 07 and again, I don't know whether this was a problem from its last vehicle or whether from sitting around a workshop unused. It stopped leaking after a bit of use and didn't leak at al until the dump the other day.
* The recently dumped oil has been in there for approx 9 months and done about 10,000km.
* Power steering pump screamed now and then on hard lock but this was getting more regular.
* Power steering pump is the usual one found on Nissan LD28 - pump rate unknown.
