Mazda do a 2.6 efi 4 pot too. Marvie and the ute equivalent.
Bigger than that you have to go euro with Porsche and Merc. Porsche go up to 3l and Merc has the 2.5 16v Cosworth motor.

Toyota 3rz fe 2.7 twin cam 16 valve
drag racers use them and get insane power (i've heard over 1000hp

)

or you could do what some guys in the states do and get a chev v8 and cut 2 cylinders off each end, it makes it a v4

so if you got a alloy 454 chev you would end up with a 3.7

a few years back there was a rally wagon called jalopy that had a 4 cyclinder boat motor in it.the motor was a ford 460 ci from memory with 4 cyclinders cut off giving it a displacement of about 3.8 ltrs (give or take a few ccs) i think it hailed from hawkes bay .used to fall over a bit

for somthing a bit different is the 4 cyl race motors that are basicly a chev v8 cut in half useing the v8 head. no idea if they are still around.
also don't forget cubic inches isn't everything

big cubes equals lots of torque

a good turbo set up will give you the torque you want, stick with a 2ltr and put a sensible sized turbo on it and you will never look back.

can I ask why you are looking for size
if its for trials, then check out the guys who are running supercharged SR20 motors
holy hell, they move quick

my little 4age pissed me off, at weekend.
even though gave " thunderguts" a good run in the mud drags
i,m already planning a new truck, though don,t want the complication of forced induction etc
presenly couldn,t get on song in third with the tyres down.........
need more torque
I,m thinking nice simple 2.6 injected from a crashed car, that i can get in there and get it done without all the finetuning and time normally involved with a new engine package.
Zuk is like a brick and never breaks, from i see lot of work can go into thoose blown sr20,s to get them right

please define biggest ??? biggest CC rating? Biggest HP? what do you wanty it for? I have seen a 9.4 litre inline 4 cylinder out of some old tractor or something fitted to a old wooden boat (how the f@ck it floats is beyond me it must weigh a tonne or three)

Check out some of the newish honda accords 2.4l about 150kw. Decent power, light, lock the centre in the fwd box and you are away.

ok, think a 9.4, 3 ton 4 cylinder is just what i need.............

got a nice custom built chain drive transfer, that is very strong, thoose fwd engines are kool , but not for this truck

If it's torque and 4 pots you are after have you considered a turbo diesel instead of petrol?
Loads around in the wreckers so prices are good.
Up to and above 3l capacity.
Simple to hook up - some more modern ones are electronic but loads aren't.
Low end tourque off the scale.
Some of the more modern 16v one even rev a bit.
I don't know what the regs allow but you can also add lpg injection for more boost - like nitros on a petrol.
If I was building a trials wagon I would seriously look at them.
Just my 2c

i think you'll find power to weight has a fair bit to do with it

Do a little research (its all there in black and white in every performance book), compare the power and torque curves of even a small turbo(for those that have missed this ongoing argument a small turbo whilst not giving as much power will wind up faster giving its results sooner so is better for 4wd'n) vs a roots charger, plan and simple you get more hp and sooner off a charger... yes at the higher end of the rev range the turbo is better more power and more efficent as it dosn't take its driving force off the engine
Now look at the extreme series trials where most of the hp stages have little to no run up so you want that power out of the gate ....
oh and from a purely asthetic value whats better the whine of the charger over the revs of the motor or a Pssft of turbo

no compitition

but no mater what I say or books on the subject or the fact that all serious dragsters run em the conjecture from the turbo boys will always keep this argument going

and on that note I dip my hat to those with turbos who will always beat me to the top of the hill

bring it own

does diesils make more torque then petrols?

tpft wrote:does diesils make more torque then petrols?
Traditionally yes. Thats why trucks, trains, diggers etc use them. For example a big Volvo truck engine will make about 460 hp but over 2000 Nm of torque.
My old TDi Disco only makes 110 hp (ish) but about 200Nm of twist.
Most (again this is very approximate) petrols are about even - if it makes 150 bhp it makes about 150 Nm.
On the other hand bike engines are all about big power and lower torque as they don't have the weight to move so a 1200 cc bike motor will make huge power 180 bhp but reallly low torque and the torque will be at high rpms too.
In a trialler you want lots of low down torque AND quick pick up which is why a traditional big capacity v8 has always been good - my old 3l Ford V6 had the worlds smallest single choke carb on it - it didn't want to rev over 4500 but it picked up from idle in a hartbeat and made lots of low down grunt.
