Escudo Diff Ratio.....Confused......

Post by Weemsy »

hey all,

i thought i would check my diff ratio's today as ive got a pair of 5.12 diff heads to bolt in, so i thought i had better check they werent already 5.12  great forward planning before i paid out for the new diffs i know

i jacked a wheel off the floor and marked up with chalk and got 2.5 prop shaft revolutions to 1 wheel revolution

WTF :?: :?: ive never heard of a 2.5 : 1 diff ratio in a 4x4, let alone a Zook

my truck is a jap import escudo 5 door auto with a g16a 16 valve motor 1992

anyone heard of, or had, these ratio diffs in an escudo/vitara before??

putting the 5.12's in will be great for rock-crawling but not much of a mile muncher i reckon............. :? :?

weemsy :?

How can I politely put it , Bugger . Looks like you have 5.12's already :D

With one wheel on the ground this locks one side of the diff , as the drive shaft turns , due to the side gears turning the other wheel turns twice as fast . So if you get 2.5 turns with one wheel free it will be 5 turns if both were free . I thinkyour only other options were 4.62's but possibly others .

Re-check it Weemsy, as there is not a lot of difference between the 5.12 (2.56) and 4.69 (2.345).

I would be very surprised if an auto jap import had 5.12's unless someone has already owned it who was into 4WD'ing.

So does that mean you have a couple of diffs for sale?

Maybe you would like to sell the ring and pinions gears to me and keep the carriers for spares? :D

I must check what I have first or I may end up doing what you may have done

I had better check what I have first before shooting out and buying something, but the weather here is crap so I wont be going out and laying under my vehicle today. Are they whole diffs etc or just the R and P?
