hi, i was wondering is there are any older shape cherokees that come out 2wd or if theres any auto 2wd gearbox that will bolt up to the 4.0L 6cyl petrol motors.
i havent had a decent look at the auto/tcase setup but could the tcase be removed somehow?
sorry for the wierd questions but i know nothing about jeeps at all
thanks
matt

I have a haynes manual for the Cherokee and it does refer to 2wd models but other than that I have never heard of any in NZ.
I think teh transfer case can be removed separately from the auto...........
But the big question why would you want a non low range 2wd cherokee.....??

ok, thanks for that,
to remove the front suspension and run 2wd,
but keep the stock motor/trans/rear axle and body

just an idea.... have heard that the cherokee autos are the same auto as a toyota one that came out (a34x I think) and when I had a look they looked very similar so it may pay to check up on it. If they are the same then you could change the bellhousing and input shaft and oil pump over from jeep auto to maybe an old supra auto. Takes about 5 mins to swap em

Why remove the transfer case, just remove the front drive shaft, leave it always in 2WD and you won't have had to do anything else

yes they came in 2wd, but not here. yes the transfer case can be removed..... echoing other comments..... Why?
The XJ came with 6 transmissions:
4 sp aisin warner AX4 (4 cylinder 84-87)
5 sp peugot BA10 (6 cyl to 87-89)
5 sp aisin warner AX5 (4 cyl 84-94)
5 sp aisin warner AX15 (6cyl 89-99)
3 sp chrysler 904 999 (v6 and 4 cyl 84-91)
4 sp aisin warner AW30-40 (87-91 6cyl)
[source: Jeep collectors Library]
I would dispute the dates on the last one.... we had them here until the model ran out, and from what im aware was the only trans used here in the petrol, the diesel may have used a different box.

i might have to stand corrected.... i can find no reference in my swathe of books to suggest they came in anything other than 4wd.
The 2 door, the four door and the pickup version (MJ, or comanche) all seem to have been 4x4.
I'm on a mission now!

YOur right on this. The cherokee box is the same as the a343 in the toyotas. Meant to be one of the stronger toyota box's. Reason i know this is when we did the Lexus V8 conversion on the prado, we used a cherokee auto ECU to make the a343 in the prado work.

awesome, thanks guys, that info helps alot,
air ride project, cant run beam axle so no point in having 4wd, and tcase is wasted space/weight and possibly hangs below the chassis, so by running ..say a 2wd toyota hilux front clip with the new mounts for motor i can keep the body and grunty motor/driveline and be 2wd,
i wasnt going to say it seeing as its a 4wd site but seeing as you guys were asking...
cheers
