3VZ-FE to W56 ?

I looked in the tech articles and couldn't find what I was after.
A mate of mine has a W56 and transfer and also a 3VZ-FE from a toyota windom, he wants to know if there is some way to bolt the two straight up or whether an adapter would be required.
Could someone please tell me if the surfs with the 3 litre petrol V6 came with the W56 or a R154 (or R151 or whatever it is called) gearbox. Thanks
