PROJECT PAJERO #3 ENGINE

Post by Zukin »

Well what else can I do to this 2.8 litre Turbo diesel engine.

Firstly I had to fix a few problems
1. Oil leak

Oil was leaking from the side of the block somewhere, we couldnt quite figure out from where?? :?
I replaced every seal that was easily accessable. Covers, sump etc, but that didnt fix it.
After poking around with a small mirror on a telescopic rod, we discovered it was leaking from behind the injector pump.
A quick look at the manual confirmed there was an O-Ring here that may need replacing.
The price for the O-ring was $5.00, but the time involved was over 5 hours!! :x
So away we went, and just as we thought the O-Ring needed replacing, so the cost was
PARTS = $5
LABOUR = $300

2. Water Leak
As with most Japanese imports, they always have a few leaks.In this case I decided to simply replace the Water Pump, so I have trouble free motoring for a while.
Check around when doing your water pump as I had quotes ranging for the pump from $80 to $300, this was not including labour to fit it!! :?

Total cost to replace water pump was $120.00

Next mission - Is to find out why they have 2x 12 volt batteries? I suspect one is for cranking and 1 is for evertyhing else!
Any ideas.
I want to see if they work together or independantly.

Cheers

About double batteries for diesel model, I saw some post in here or may be in the forum at UK pajero owner’s club.
You could Google them I guess.

If I remember correctly, the starter for diesel is using 24V (it can start with 12V).
Most of the import in NZ from Japan is cold climate edition. You can tell this, if you have orange sticker on the rear gate.
Maybe there are some other reasons, too.
I used to have 2.5 and 2.8 and both had double batteries, but not the petrol model.

I was right
One is used simply to crank the old girl over 8)
The other is used to power everything else.

Basically means I am carrying a spare battery :wink: I ran one flat, the one that is used for cranking, So i hooked up the other one to start it up, and put the flat one where the accessory one was.
End of the day 2 fully charged batteries :lol:

There maybe other reasons why there is two, but I am buggered if I know
