transfer case

I have a 1994 2.8 diesel auto and will be putting bigger tyres on it once I wear out my 31x10.5 kumho m/ts (what is it with 4x4 the tyres are never big enough!!!! but as I hate sidelings with a passion will ony got to 32s and wont be doing suspension or a body lift!!!!)

Is it possible to change the low range "cog" in the transfer case to lower low range, I having having to drive over my brakes at the moment and while it means I dont lock up a wheel or go too fast it cant be great for the brake pads.

Does anyone make these or is it a case of going to an enginerring firm and what type of $$$ am I looking at?

The other option is change the diffs but as its my daily drive and does a fair few open road miles I dont want to increase the revs on the open road.

not sure but do marks do crawler gears for them?

i know they do for the 3.0 and think they do for the 3.5 but not 100%

Prices ex Christchurch
23 tooth $1875.00
24 tooth $1740.00

They say I need to take the trasfer case off and count the teeth to find out which one I need.

Im thinking tyres first I was thinking 32x11.5x15 but will probably got for a small 33x12.5x15 (so as to not need certification) on my safari 15x7 steel rims. Also as I hate sidelings I dont want to give my pajero a lift, I want to keep the centre of gravity as low as possible!!!!!

Transfer case next year

Thats some impressive mark up from Marks adapters or somewhere along the line. Contact me if you wish when you want them, I might be after a set also - I'll get them direct from the manufacturer & maybe we could save on freight.

Cheers,
Glen

Let me know when you get the price.

Do you agree that that only way to determine 23 tooth or 24 tooth is to take the transfer case off and count them?

As its my daily drive it will be twice the work, take it off, put it back then off again to fit the lower gears.

just a suggestion.... the sort of money, time and effort you're talking about here would buy a lot of brake pads and even rotors. Left foot braking at low speeds is unlikely to wear pads much anyway and is a very good driving technique to master when offroad. If its working for you now, then keep doing it - opinion only, cheers

Yes I do lots of left foot braking, right foot go pedal... but do worry about long down hills and brake fade when things get too hot.

$1,800 for parts alone with modifications required to the transfer case to fit it is getting a bit steep

You don't need to pull the gearbox apart to see what one it is. You only want to be doing that once as t get the transfer case out is a bit of a job and they are extreemly heavy.

$1800 is pretty steep.

Good theory Gordon but the Pajero's are just to high geared. Especially when you get up to 33 inch tyres. Most of the time you get away with it but with a 1.9 transfer ratio it can be hard work. The auto will definately be better in that respect.

I had to replace a "split" transfer case on an FJ40 once (brough it off a guy who had accidential driven in 4High on the seal and heard a huge bang!!!) what a mission.

Is there a way to tell if it is a 23 or 24 tooth spline without removing it?

I have no idea what spline it is, but there is only one set of gears that fit onto a 2.8/3.5 auto. Just ask for that set.

There are 4 different ones available.

These ones take low range to 2.85:1
3.0/2.5 Manual
3.0/2.5 Auto

These ones take low range to 3.15:1
3.5/2.8 Manual
3.5/2.8 Auto

What would the gearing be like if you were to change the diffs to 4.1 ratio, any better or would it still be to high geared?.

Hi nivaman, The diffs are already at least 4.6, I run 4.9 diffs from a 2.8 LWB model.

Ok so i have the v5mt1 box which i understand came in petrol and diesel, the petrol model came with cable clutch and the diesel came with hydraulic??.
Is anybody able to tell me the petrol box ratios or are they the same as the diesel??, would the ratios in the diesel box be too low to use it behind a petrol engine?.
