So is 4wd'ing part of that plan? helping the council with cleanups and car wreck removals would help? maybe combined clubs down there can help and ORE and them can work together to ensure you still have access....

I see the article mentions a consultation process..looks like they have yet again not publicly tols anyone about this so called "public consultation"

Hmm I didn't know boo about this. Will be following with interest. DOC have just got consent to build their headquarters just on the south side of the Rga bridge. And most of the river outside the proposed area (i.e. some of the okuku and ashley) has actually slipped into the hands of DOC at some stage so technically that could be closed up like other DOC land at anytime they decide to act.

The problem here is even with these last few rains the river has affected most of the area between the stopbanks to an extant that it would be silly to put any structures, fences or grassed areas between them. They had just developed a nice wee walkway at the domain on the south bank between the stopbank and river proper and that is now closed as its all silted and muddy from the high river and they need to start again.

All I can see them doing is fencing roadwy and areas off to stop car dumping and hence access. There is not much vandalism down there as its all a natural, changing environment (tagging on the bridges is about all). So any fences or structures that go in is creating a target for vandalism.

There is one nice area that has been beautified just east of the rail bridge on the north bank with natives etc which is very nice, I think the grass might even get mown there, there is a muddy rutted track through the middle of it which might dissapoint those that have done work there so I would not be against these areas being fenced in - but not everything else being fenced out!

I'm not against it being enhanced and think that generally they have done well down the waimak but can't see the same basic plan working on the Ashley so will be keen to follow.

No - other side of the river, just a small area of about an acre.
