Jerry, please delete this post. That is not an FJ40 - it is some sort of road loving vehicle pretending to be an FJ40
Here is a nice Show pony FJ40:

Yes, you are a bstard! I would have loved to go for a play in that. It was for sale on Ebay a while ago
This one sold about 2 weeks ago for USD35,000. I asked him if he wanted to trade my truck plus cash his way but didn't even get a response:

Be a shame to get that green thing dirty at Pureora or Thommos, yes? but imagine it playing in the Canty braided rivers... or up the Goldley watching Tim sleeping in his crawler laying on its side......

Not...SPOA with flat springs is more stable and works better.

Put me down for Spring ova.

I wonder if all HiLuxs are unstable

because of there springs being on top of the diffs

are you people serious? higher = higher, basic physics. hiluxes are designed as standard as spring over. Its exactly the same as going and putting 5" lift blocks under the springs on a hilux and saying its more stable

Now that really is being silly, Why would you want to put 5" lift blocks in a Hilux. It would want to fall over. My Midi Land Cruiser when I bought it, had lifted springs and longer spring hangers and drove like a dog, had heaps of body roll,no articultion and wallowed all over the road . I put 60mm wider diffs in under the reset ( flat ) springs, standard spring hangers, and it ended up with
no body roll in the corners, tons of articulation and 100mm more clearance under the axel tubes And only 25mm higher than when I started. I did tip it on it's side once, but that was driver error ( brain fade ).

I don't think he's a wank for staying with a spring UNDER. I think it rides better that way. Lower center of gravity. I think the spring over looks cool. But that's all, it's just for looks, and that's wanky.

No challenge at all.
With a higher center of gravity it'll tip over easy. Oh and when it's not off road, I'd like to see a spring over keep up with cornering the way mine does on road.

Nice. But just not street legal like the first 40.
And what's left on that machine that really is off a 40? The front body kit?

I'm not the only one that drives his off road machine ON ROAD!
Spring over for the wanky win look.

Like Turoa said its basic physics
Putting wider diffs in is what helped with stabilty

Pete, with a spring over your going to get more clearance to run big tyres and more room for flex which are both real benefits to offroad driving.
Yes with any lift the center of gravity is higher but with that logic are you suggesting we take RX7s off road cause they wont tip over???
Think you'll find Wopass' truck is road legal and while maybe not as pretty as your truck it would surely out perform your sprung under truck offroad.
SOA is not for looks it is a real modification that can assist an FJ40's offroad capability.

True.
I like the wide track of the Patrol axles. AND they're STRONG!

Of course you're right mnc. But most trucks I see on the road get that combination wrong. They wallow all over the place and look dangerous frankly.

I think getting that combination right is the key. But hey, my truck ain't used for a lot of off road as everyone knows.

But hey, I give the off road thing a go. At the end of the day it's an everyday round about. And it's my only tow machine and travels on the open road lots. So I don't like anything slowing me down on the corners. And I'm still impressed at how my brick handles the open road.

personally, I'm not a fan of SOA, but I have had the priveledge of following Wopass down the road, and it looked fine to me cruising at a shade over the open road speed limit.
besides, this argument has been thrashed about on this site a shiteload before

A shade over the limit? Follow me when mine gets off the clock skid. It rides sweet as.
But yeah ok. We won't thrash this subject out again.
Sorry.

back to the original post.
It's a really nice (spring under) FJ40. But i couldn't imagine getting it really dirty. It looks toooo nice!

was a bit more than a shade when i passed that car before 8mile J.... and yes it sits quite nice on the road thank you. just ask anyone that has followed me when on road. drive all over the place and some pretty long trips and its nice and comfy and stable.that said, pete's would be better on road as he has about 300hp more and stiff as a board springs and bling as shockys so would be like a go cart compared to mine.
and to clear things up a bit, just because ts SOA doesnt mean its to the moon jacked, i have extremely flat saggy springs and that keeps it relativly low compared to a lot of SOA trucks, and with the flat saggy springs it makes it nice and supple so it flexes pretty good for a leaf sprung bus, so if you had lifted springs enough to get 36" wheels under you SUA you would be far more inclined to tip over than my SOA truck therefore SOA for the win. apples with apples here folks.
and thats the thread well and trully thrashed
