Hi all,
I currently run 225/75/16 ATs on my old Disco, just about stuffed. Looking for some mud tyres, but not full on aggressive types as I do alot of driving on the road. Thinking Firestone RMT or Goodyear MTRs, seem to be good tyres for the $. Ideally i'd like 245/70 or 75s but neither the RMT or MTR come in these sizes - any other makes of tyres which are an in between of an AT and a MT that you can recommend in this size?
Cheers

Cooper Discoverer S/T. Think they're in the higher end price-wise. Come in 245/75. We've had the 235/70 on our Disco, no complaints

Except wear.
Had 245/75's on my Disco. The Discoverer STT's are the only Cooper tyres which don't carry an 80000km guarantee. And for good reason. Cooper's would be out of business by now if they did. Mine lasted less than 40000km. But in that time they performed very well. Never had a puncture, and they always amazed me with the amount of grip they gave me for a relatively modest mud tyre. Currently running GT Radial Savero's in 235/85 R 16 size. Same story, about half worn in around 10 - 12 thousand kays ( a nice even wear too) and have performed reasonable well considering they are a fairly small and modest tyre compared to what most guys tend to run.
In my opinion Disco's are under-tyred. The standard fitment 205 R 16's are just a joke. Fitting anything larger means the inevitable guard trimming and suffering the consequences of making changes the the overall gearing. Having 3.54 : 1 diff ratios doesn't help when wanting to fit slightly larger than standard tyres.

For the work wagon (2006 Prado - factory winch bar - 9000 superwinch - everything else stock) we run the Cooper STT. Mix of road/off-road would be 90%/10% and the wear is becoming very noticable after 50,000km. About 50% tread on the rear and 40 on the front. Needs rotation but have noticed that as they wear they wear faster and faster. Also road-noise has increased noticably since they reached the 50% mark in wear.
Only complaints is their lack of sidling hold. High level of caution required. Rear end needs a concerted effort on the brakes to hold onto the hillside. Otherwise these are great flat-land mud tyres.
If it wasn't for the poor sidling, I'd buy a set to put on my daily drive LR 110 flatdeck.
In aside by side comparison between a Nissan SWB safari wagon on Saveros and the work prado on STTs, the Saveros seemed to be the better tyre overall given the sidling slip we had. How much this was down to the individual vehicle balance is anyones guess... Toyota vs Nissan Savero vs Cooper
