i have an 89 surf and the temp guage is abit faulty, i is generally either off or goes straight up to nomal running temp as soon as the engine is turned on even when cold. and ideas??? also the headlight full beams are abit weird, when you pull them toward you, (where it doesnt stay on) they work fine, but when you push them away (so they stay on on their own) the lights turn off completely. however all they dash lights say that the lights are on full. this makes me think that the switch on the steering column is working fine and the problem is somewhere elce. any ideas????
cheers pete.

Hey pete your not alone here  I have a 92 surf and have a similar problem with the temperature gauge. Sometimes it stays on cold for a couple of weeks then it will start working for a while
If you find out what the prob is post it here as i would like to sort mine too!!

ok .send me your e-mails and i will send you all the diagnostis pages and fault finding info.............. but this is what may be going wrong..if your temp gauge is going to the max position it will be shortening to ground ( most probably shorting in the sensor ) trace the wire from the sensor to the engine connector and check for breaks in that wire .it may be touching the body.........next if your gauge is not working at all it may not be connected to the sensor ( check the sensor terminal it may be loose or have loose and broken wires in that singale pin plug . hope this helps .PS the colour of the wire from the coolant sensor is YELLOW AND GREEN and the sensor is located just under the thermostat housing ...it,s the sensor with 1 flat pin plug... or a round pin plug

oopps sorry . if you want to check and make sure that the temp guage is working correctly ground the sensor wire to the body it should max the guage out ........
