70 series cruiser but what motor?
70 series cruiser but what motor?
I'm torn.
I have a lowish budget but require a motor transplant into my 70 series cruiser.
Im going to want to spin 35" wheels.
My question is do a go towards the lexus V8 or maybe a supercharged holden v6???
would the v6 have enough tourqe or will i be down on power??
cheers for the help

Two letters for you V8

Re: 70 series cruiser but what motor?
no mater what people say 4wds need torque and torgue means cubes ,go the chevy yeeehaa .as a matter of interest a 1uz with all its bits attached weighs the same as a sb chev with its bits attached .i know what i would do

FJ40,INJECTED SB 406 CHEV, LOCKER,35 SIMEXS,warn winch , 80seies vx 4.2 24v turbo diesel ,fr and rear lockers 3" exh top mount intercooler, 021 724482
Re: 70 series cruiser but what motor?
I'd definately go the supercharged v6 all the way
the v8 has about 20kw more power but has less torque unless you get one later than a '97 compared to a vt stock supercharged v6.
And another upside is you don't have to rev the guts out of a v6

Thats never a good start

The easiest conversion is the chev coz you can use an after-market bellhousing and engine mounts and the whole thing is a straight bolt up from there

Re: 70 series cruiser but what motor?
The V6 is a good power plant no question. But that even supercharged can't match an injected 350 Chev in sheer low down grunt. You can pickup an average used LS1 for around $3k now. I know you're on a limited budget. I was told buy Kevin Geary today that he can land a brand new LS3 (6.4L) here in Chch for just over $7k. Do some homework and phone around and get some prices..
Good luck.
Good luck.

LS3 MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM DRIBBLE DROOL

Re: 70 series cruiser but what motor?
LS1 or 3 would be awesome.
cheaper scale motor is nicer.
give it death for a year or two then look more into a big boys motor.
21 year old landscaper wage just isn't quite enough to be puttin 7grand motors in
my truck.
Interestingly also after a bit of research some of which is questionable as who believes everything you read on the internet
a 5.0l commadore V8 produces more torque than an LS1 at lower rev range and a factory supercharged V6 out of a 2001 model produces 10Nm less still giving it 25Nm more than a LS1 and LT1 chev. If this is true or not i do not know but some of the lesser horsepower plants seem to deliver more torque.
Correct me if i'm wrong. be interesting to see what people come up with

Re: 70 series cruiser but what motor?
I think you might be hard pushed to find a 5.0L V8 in good con. They're like hens teeth.
The LS1 is cheap bang for your buck at around $3k and you can pick one up real easy. The V8 Lexus is cheaper but the LS1 smokes the cheaper Lexus V8's.

got that right, from what i have heard take a commie v6 past about 5500 and the the time bomb starts ticking!!
i have changed my computer to a megasquirt from a commodore, but have rev limited it to a 5500 hard limit, 5200 soft limit.
V6 may be a bight on the light side for a cruiser, unless it has a supercharger nailed to it

Time bomb at 5500? i sit mine on the rev limiter quite frequently and it's still going strong. i've even overheated it a couple of times from being a retard and fogetting to turn the engine fan on, and once when a heater hose split. i love mine and if i was to build up one from scratch i'd do the supercharged v6 for sure.
Re: 70 series cruiser but what motor?
can someone please give me contact numbers for where i mite be able to possibly pick up an LS1 for around the 3K mark.
That sort of price could end up to be quite appealing.
Cheers Darren

Re: 70 series cruiser but what motor?
have a look at the damaged car auctions. get a wrecked car and sell all the parts. then you get a FREE motor... hehe

Re: 70 series cruiser but what motor?
What area are you in Darren?
If you're in Chch I'd see Reon at A-one auto wreckers. (03) 379-719
They only deal in Holden spares.
Otherwise just keep an eye out on Trade Me.
I saw a 308 V8 for a buy now of $1500. The seller reckoned it's a good runner, no smoke.
I also saw two 5.0L V8's on TM.
