We (Marlborough Club) are considering buying a GPS unit. I really don'y know much about the options, so would like some suggestions...
It'll be used by different Trip leaders, so needs to be portable between vehicles, easy to use, good map software support, and I guess reasonable memory so we can keep trip data. Like I said, I'm no expert, but someone out there will be...
We have a bit of cash squirrelled away, but we're hoping to get some funding from the Lion Foundation as well, so even some more expensive options can be considered. Looking at getting an EPIRB as well, but that seems more straight-forward. Less choices....

my latest greatest GPS purchase is a Garmin - Colorado - which will soon have my NZ Topo maps in glorius 3d

I own the following Garmin GPS's - 276C, M5 pda, Rhino 520, 2 Rhino 130's, C320, Quest and Quest2 - I have owned Vista, 76C, VistaHCX, 60CSX, etc
How much dosh have you got to play with - how will you use the GPS?
In my 4wd - I use the 276C running my Auto-Routing Topo map and the M5 running Memory Map - with pre-planned track logs and waypoints in both for a quick visual reference. If we are going somewhere new and difficult a couple of our more energetic members have taken to tramping the track and way pointing more difficult spots and collecting the track log.
I suggest that you only look at the newest Garmin GPS's that have the SIRF aerial for exceptional reception under bush cover. There are heaps of places to purchase a GPS at a reasonable price. http://www.gpsdiscount.com is a good place to view models. You can also check out http://www.myegoods.co.nz and http://www.logicalchoice.co.nz etc
