GQ electrical problem

Stereo, clock, fuel guage, speedo, odometer, temp guage and oil pressure guage all went dead on the weekend. Have checked all the fuses and all ok. Pulled the left hand panel off, checked the fuses in the reducer and all ok as well. Any ideas what else it could be????

ciggy lighter has not worked since I bought it 2 yrs ago. Ciggy is 24voly. Stero, clock and dash instruments are 12volt.

Do you have a multi meter????

If not, go buy one as your not gonna solve this yourself with out one.

Checking fuses will only highlight a short circut, not a failure.

Check for 24+ volts into the reducer.

Check for 12+ volts out of the reducer.

If the reducer hasn't packed up, then check plug connections and circut continuity.

My bet lies with the reducer either not getting power, or its died due to old age or water and mud ingress

yep got a multi meter, haven't had time yet.

I'm leaning towards this as well.

you dont need a multi meter, can give false readings (back feeds, faulty relays where contacts are stuffed but can show as correct voltage
80% of faults can be found with simple test light
make a test light using a 24v (5-10W) bulb,
just make sure wiring to bulb are taped up
easy to tell if 24 or 12v as bulb will be brighter for 24v
check all fuses under bonnet to
havnt worked on GQ but id say u have acc and ign feed to reducer plus might have batt, also check earths too
unplug reducer and see if power at plug
What where you doing at time? eg off roading, if so do wire pull test too, might have broken copper but insulating might be fine, found common on logging trucks

if blowen fuse and cant find fault without blowing fuse make another tester, with head light bulb 24v(it makes good short welder)and maybe a buzzer(this is what ive made)plug into each terminal of blowen fuse, both buzzer and bulb will start working,
start trying to find fault,eg unplug stuff, wiggle looms etc, when bulb and/or buzzer stop running theres the fault/area

sounds like wear and tear, check for power at all fuse, not just if they are blowen, dont use multi meter, can get feed back voltage, use a light,
test for power at reducer, power in and out reducer, reducer faulty
no power to reducer, check relay ignition switch

Hey Al could this be due to the new altinator pumping to many amp's into the reducer and frying it  I am asking you this before I go get a new (second hand) altinator for my truck as Bubbles stole new shiny new one :x and was going to go the same way as you with more amp's

after rereading this was other things working till u turned stereo on?
if so how is stereo wired and age of radio? coz most late model radio use more power on the batt feed (upto 10amps) than acc feed,
acc feed is just control to turn unit on/off and 90% after market reducers radio memory feed is low amps out (less than 1 amp)

dont know how your reducer works so this might have fried reducer,
factory radio if it had memory feed would be low amps and higher amps for acc
if you really suspect reducer open it up and have a look inside, might be blowen diode or burnt track,u can easly fix them but need to work out what did the damge

you are safe, higher output alt is all good, so long as you dont have any nails, tin foil as fuses and yes ive seen them b4 :D

wires can do ya head in at times.... just remember its not as bad as hydrolic pilot lines or airlines on trucks (smaller nylon ones) they are all the same colour

LOL air lines simple compare to inter trucks, all black with at each end white marker labels that most are wiped off, or dirty old citreon car that had all wiring under dash where yellow, got to remem that the wiring is taped up too
Fiat OMFG they can from factory have 2-4 diff colors with joins in milddle for 1 wire, its as if say blue wire not long ennouth so solder/crimp a yellow to make right length

manafact sometimes have no idea
