Re: mid mounting winches
Hi mate i would think real hard about rear mounting a winch unless it was only a back up one ,We spent along time checking out the pros and cons of doing it but came to the conclusion the only real advantage was a better approach angle ,Up here in the NI quite a few of the winch challenge trucks have rear mounted winches and after watching them over the last few years it seem 90% of the time when the rope breaks it recoils back through the guide tubes making it a bitch to get it back through the tubes while your normally buried in mud also you have probems if you have to tie a knot as it wont feed through the guides ,also seen a few having trouble when the rope jams on the drum ,its a bit hard to be at the front of the truck pulling and to see whats happining with the winch in the rear .just my thoughts..Steve
Ps and yes i do have a rear mounted winch but it is only our back up for blonde moments

Re: mid mounting winches
hmmm that gives me something to think about, as i was planning on going mid behind the cab as well, i can't tuck mine in at the front caus the radiator has to sit so far forward due to a long supra engine and didn't want it hanging way out front..
any further comments or pro's and con's from others would be cool

Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!
Re: mid mounting winches
thanks for that monstr. Just like rangimotors I have a supra but have the added bonus with the radiator in the back. But I have been told that you really want the winch as close to the battery as you can (correct????) . and as my battery is in behind the cab it makes logical sense to mid mount.....I think

Hi Yes your right regarding the shorter the leads the better i went to BOC welding supplies and got the largest welding cables they had and used that ,also not so much of an issue for me as im running 24v through a 12v winch ,Cheers

Re: mid mounting winches
our winch is in the back and we have never had a problem with it, it is really good because it gets alot of weight off the front so you can get better weight distribution

Re: mid mounting winches
I would be behind winch mid mounting the cab , I cant see it being a problem it is a much better place for it and the cable will spool back on the drum alot straighter than haveing it on the uront of the turuck

For the battery position in respect to the winch it doesn't really matter as long as the cable is big enough so you don't get a volt drop. You can get big cable from an electrical wholesaler bigger than welding cable if req'd.
